Just started our new kitchen project and thought I would post up progress as it happens. This is what we have now – not exactly offensive. It was in when we bought the house, but doesn’t really “go” with a 1910 house.

We’ve knocked though to a utility room behind which goes out to a raised deck. Left with a 8m x 4m room which really is a lot better. Here's the room cleared with the beams in and the utilities for the island.

Here’s what we’re putting in. It's actually changed a bit since the plan was done but this is pretty much it.

Handmade painted tulipwood cabinets – painted chalk white and steel grey
Black Granite worktops
Travertine floor

Traditional but contemporary if you know what I mean

It’s all made and getting installed now. I’ll post up more pics as we go..

You're going to have tulipwood and then paint it?

Thought that was a bit strange myself. Apparently Tulipwood isn't very exotic - it's just strong and light and has very few knots in it so it's suited to painting.

Travertine and underfloor heating are all finished now and the units are going in - hope it turns out like it is supposed to!

The tulipwood I know is a tropical hardwood used as a veneer for inlays etc.

However a quick trip to the internet explains the matter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulipwood

It seems there are several different ones.

What did you do with the old kitchen if I may be so bold?

Half of it (the kitchen part) was commandered by the brother-in-law. Completely rebuilt exactly the same way in his house - looks a bit surreal. It's actually a really good kitchen - Miele - so would have been a shame to skip it. It just didn't fit in with what we wanted to do. The other half is in the basement as our new utility room. Looks great...

Really coming together now. We're quite a bit further on than this but these are the latest pics I've remembered to download from the camera

Next - appliances, granite, plumbing, cornicing, plumbing, painting, electrics, TV, etc. Not too much then!

Any more progress over the weekend? I've been searching this section of PH for kitchen ideas and suppliers, etc as we're looking into getting ours done. Trouble is I've done virtually everything in our house and I struggle to pay for someone else to do jobs, especially if I don't think they'll be a thorough as I would be. I like your floor tiles, they look similar to the travertine ones I put in my bathroom (last year's project), thinking of doing the kitchen the same.

Sorry, just noticed that post - been away. Good progress though - it's nearly finished now. These are the latest pics I've downloaded so far. All going fine apart from the goddamn fridge - it wasn't measured properly and sticks out way more than it should. Fitters are digging out the plaster to get it in the right depth. The Miele coffee machine is awesome...

The tiles are great. Loads of variation as its natural stone, but I really like that.

Looks like you had a Siemens 500mm built-in microwave in the 'old' kitchen - 2008 model - hope you didn't throw it away as I paid £395 for mine!

Thanks for the update, looks like you're getting there. Just had (another) kitchen company out for a quote tonight: I'm so used to DIY I can't believe how much it all costs, I think I'll end up doing most of it myself anyway......

Love what you are doing, looks great.

Slightly off topic, but in your first photo of the original kitchen you have a duck wine holder on the shelf. Can I ask where you got it as it would make a great pressie for my MIL. Thanks and sorry for stealing your thread!

Correct - Siemens 500mm - went with the rest of the kitchen to its new home. Great microwave, but to be honest the one we had was getting on a bit.

We had 5 companies quote. The one we chose was one of the cheaper, but it was still enough! Install cost was pretty minor in comparison to the other costs though.

Sorry - stole that pic from the sale brochure. The ducks were the property of the previous owners I'm afraid.

We've had three quote so far, but not had the firm price as yet, just the site visit. I was really hoping to get one job done in the house that I only had to be involved with the choosing and not the doing. frown One of the firms by shear coincidence has worked for a friend of ours that do up (high end) houses for a living and their daughter is currently having a kitchen done by them. Trouble is they were talking in terms of £15-20K. I think we could get most of the effect by doing some of the work ourselves (stripping out, painting and tiling, plus we know a tame plasterer), but it's the quartz worktops that help give the finish we want and they have to be done by professionals..the travertine floor tiles are like I have already fitted in our bathroom, so that's a known quantity and seeing yours reminds me why we want them.

EDIT: First quote is in.....looks like another DIY job for me then. frown

Get your check book out you tight arse. If you start on that kitchen it will be out of action for nine months like your bathroom was.

laugh You know me too well, plus the OH says 18 months for this job. biggrin However, I'm not impressed so far at £17K and that's with me taking everything out first, making good, me tiling afterwards and having our tame plasterer prepare the walls and ceiling (me/plasterer friend knocking a wall down too). If they do everything it's closer to £25K, just for a poxy kitchen. eek

I adore the blue you have used on the island unit. It works so well with the granite, wood and chrome. Would you be so kind as to share its details?
