So I have kept cold water fish, which were cool but a bit dull, I'm thinking perhaps tropical fish, but then again Crayfish/Crabs or other odd creatures like that are cool, but how hard are they to keep (tried keeping a fesh water crayfish, it lasted 2 days...)

Other suggestions please!

(The tank is approx 2.5 feet by 1 foot)

My cold water fishies were just fine and dandy, lasting a year and still alive in my brothers fish pond...

Hmm kind of in the same position, I have three goldfish, but they have outgrown the tank. So they are off to a pond at the weekend.

Thinking about going tropical - 60 litre tank, and I have the heater thingy already.

Goldfish are just too damm messy

They didnt die, thats all. Freshwater crabs will escape. Shrimps, etc will bore you silly (assuming you dont kill them again)

Im off for a decent sized tank (100l) and then Im going to get a peacock mantis shrimp....

They are cute, cuddily and will brutally kill anthing that gets within a foot of it or lives in its tank, it doesnt care how big or how hard, this little creature will figure something out and go and kill it.

They are very intelligent and grow upto 7-9" and will go for you if you look like food.

Why?

cause its cool...

I didn't kill nuffink, I reckon it was my housemate...

Actually, it's odd as the crayfish was alive for a fortnight in a buket of pondwater but when put into the tank lasted 2 days!

Err.. that's a standard small fishtank size. Some small community fish would be your best bet. But Tiggsy is right that if you're just starting out, bigger is better in respect of tank size, as it's easier to keep the awter perameters stable in a alrger body of water.

I used to keep piranhas as a hobby but you'd need a much bigger tank than that for any of the shoaling species, you could try and single Serrasalmus Spilopleura if you want a little nipper though. Interesting talking point.

Dwarf Aquatic Frogs, i had a few in my tropical tank, never bothered the fish at all. Good for something different, they dont really do that much though and watch out for getting the wrong species some will grow to a mega size and eat your fish!.

And probably rip my sack off for daring to think it could live in such a small tank!

If you do they are very easy to keep, just you have to learn to be a killer tho...

They can live off dead stuff, but once in a while a live crab needs to be sacrificed as they need to keep their bashers in tip top condition otherwise they lose them when molting and whats the point in that.
