My folks had their drive blocked paved a couple of weeks ago. I didnt think too much of it as they are (although in their 70's) quite able to look after themselves! However, just found out it cost £9k. Now the last time i had a dive done it was 10 years ago and done by pikeys so i'm no expert.....but £9k? Just seemed a lot.

The pic below shows the plot - basically the old 2 (or 3 minis) car length drive was done as well as a wide section to the front door (wide enough to get a small car on so they can now have 3 cars on the drive) and then a footpath wide section across the front of the house to their side gate to the rear garden. Done very well with nice raised edges, a little flower bed left in front of the house, drain in the middle and nice curves, etc.....but £9k?

They werent travelers either as they still have their big advert/placard things up on the lawn to get more biz!

If its a fair price then cool....just wondered though.

[Nick the Greek] I don't know Tom, Seems expensive [Nick the Greek]

I'd guess for private works, against commercial, you'd be looking around £45/m2 being generous dependant on the blocks.

Most of the money to be fair has probably gone where you can't see it. Was there a lot of groundwork to do etc?

ETA - I've known of someone paying £2k for a crappy tarmac job big enough for 2 cars - there was between 4" & 6" of base & about 1 1/2" of tarmac. Cash job obviously.....

My parents are just paying about 7.5k for a similar job. A lot of the worth was to take up the concrete previously laid, get drainage right etc.

There's is from a very reputable friend, who has done a great job on a patio before at a very reasonable price, so this seems fair.

We were quoted £10k for tar and shingle! Along with a bit of digging and concrete disposal, but still....

When we were looking the guide price was £75/m2 for block paving. So how many m2 is the driveway?

ok - seems they paid the "too old and daft to haggle" price then....was worried they'd paid the "ripped off" price!

£9k for some bricks, a skip and a few days work....i'm in the...actually, no...i'm in a far better job than lugging bricks about but still, good work if you dont like suits!

had a slightly larger area done, with a cement bed (rather than the cr8ppy plastic lining that doesn't work anyway), my choice of block paving, for £6500 .. so yep they were probably 'overcharged'

Was there a proper invoice, pay by cheque, VAT etc? Did they seal it - the seal costs a fortune?

It seems on the high side, but not outrageous if it's a good job by a reputable firm.

You may as well ask if 9k is a fair price for the next car that drives down the road after the pic was taken! Asking if 9k is a fair price from that pic (which doesn't even show the new drive) is pretty hard.

Which area do you live in?
What was there before?
What type of blocks are they?
What work was involved?

£45 a square m is pikey prices and yes they have signs too. 9k could be a very fair price or they could have been royally done over.

£45 is a pikey price? You should try contracting in the North West where £36 to £38 is now uncompetative.

Thats fine....i was asking because i thought it may be like saying i just saw a car that looked like a family hatchback and it cost £50k.....that would set alarm bells rining to anyone that knows cars - from this post i get the feeling £9k may be perfectly fine...so i'm happy.

Whereabouts in the North West are you? I know people that are charging considerably more than £45 in the NW.
