Hello,

Just purchased a dimmer switch for the babies room. Have fitted others in the house no problem, but the existing wiring for this one seems a little odd (with no neutral/earth being used?).

Could someone clarify where the wires from the first photo should go to the dimmer in the second photo?

The single red wire is going to "1" and the other two red's to "COM" (clicky phots for larger versions if you like)

Any help would be superb!

Thanks in advance,

Neil.

Supply to L1 and load to the x terminal.

Does that mean 1 to L1 and COM to x?

Yes. Doesn't matter enourmously, but that should be fine.

Well, it's AC at the end of the day so there's really no positive and negative.

No! The two wires go into x and the single to L1 and earth the switch plate.

There's some disagreement about this, but there's a strong body of opinion that it's best for babies to sleep in a dark room at least for the first 6mths. If there's a noticeable light source then it interferes with the development of their eyes.

Thanks for the advice. The baby will be sleeping in a darkened room, he's only 4 days old and will be in our room for the first few months. The dimmer is purely for his nursery for reading bed time stories when he moves in there.
