any washing machine experts?

We've got a Hotpoint Aquarius WMA58 washing machine which has decided to stop spinning
It was making a strange noise a couple of days ago, but was fine after that.
It starts as normal and starts filling up with water but the drum won't spin at all.
I've checked the belt is still on, and it seems to spin as normal when the belt is turned so it sounds more like a problem with the motor.
Has anyone had any experience of similar problems and what may cause it? Any idea how much it could cost for a replacement motor?

Could be the brushes in the motor. Do you have a test meter? If so check to see if the motor is getting power when it is meant to, it will be 230v so be careful and watch you fingers in the pulley and belt in case it suddenly starts to turn!
