Couple of question if the knowledgeable people ph wouldn't mind.

My mothers 30 year old back boiler system has given up the ghost, well more specifically the BG service engineer broke a cut off valve and it cant be replaced. He also caused several cracked joints while hitting said valve with a 1/2lb screwdriver. She is pretty pissed off at that as BG are denying its their (or their engineers) fault. She is on their top of the range service contract.

Anyway, She is looking for a new boiler and BG quoted almost 3000 for a replacement. The quote was for the following.

Worchester Greenstar 12Ri.
Changed from a gravity feed to a pumped system
radiators need "treating".
install gas pipe work for new boiler.
connect boiler electrics
install auto bypass
hole in wall for new flume
bosh flume management.

1 . Not knowing much about plumbing i am asking if this is a fair price, i am expecting a few how long is a piece of sting answers smile

2nd Question. If she is not on benefits of any kind, just her police pension and the fact that she is over 60. is she entitled to any grants to install a new efficient "green system" ? I have had a quick look and it looks like unless your scrounging off the government the answer is no.

3rd question. Can anyone recommend a decent plumber in west surrey?

any help appreciated.

Go to a local Corgi registered heating engineer. BG wanted £3600 to replace our boiler while the local bloke took £1995 for the same make boiler plus fitting thermostatic valves.

ETA - our bloke did almost exactly what your list states, along with flushing the rads and running new inhibitors around the system etc.

Isn't she entitled to £300 off with the warmfront thing? Or is that over 65s?

Yes BG are expensive, we got our m-i-l £900 discount off them for a very similar type job, BG have an autumn sale on. With all the discounts BG were actually cheaper than the local plumbers.

Having said all that it's always amazing how quotes start off with a boiler £800 retail end up pushing 3k.

We are a family run business of caterers and own properties in various places, when ever anything goes wrong we price up the parts etc, then looking the local paper for trades (if we don't already know someone) we get them to quote for a day rate or the job as a whole with us supply the parts.

Boilers: we use Ferroli and have never had a problem with any of them, they are so good that they offer a 5 year warranty and are £300 under the others. There will be some on PH who have had problems but we have 5 or 6 Ferroli combi boilers all working as they should.

Why cant the valve be replaced??

Is it just that BG cant be bothered to replace a part they broke or can they not get the part?

My mum has a back boiler, she has spoken to several Gas engineers over the years about changing it and keeps being told not to bother. They are much better than Combi's apparently.

Has she tried a local specialist to see if they can get the parts??

tvradict -

BG has said they cannot get parts. the engineer phones two places in front of my mum to check. I have searched but i am just guessing at the valve based on my mums description as no part numbers were written down.

I found parts for 150-200 online but i am waiting for the engineer to return to fix parts he broke and then i can get my mum to ask for the exact device and part number.

also the gas fire in front has been condemed but its rarly used so that is not a issue.

Get rid of the British Gas servicing and get a local Gas Safe engineer to service it yearly. BG seem to pull the 'can't find parts - you need a new boiler - here's a quote' line often. The quote comes in very high and I bet a good Gas Safe bloke could get the boiler up and running/ find the part.

The BG engineer will only be able to ring manufactures BG use for parts. Doesn't mean it's not available.

Oh yes it is. No Gas Safe certified fitter would re-commision the boiler if the fire is "condemmed".

What make is it? Parts should be easy to get. And an easy job to do.
