anyone have any recommendations for places to look for some undercabinet lighting? I really can't stand all these crappy unimaginative little round halogens and spots, half hidden and generally crap - I want something architectural that'll be part of the design! Unfortunately nearly everywhere I'm looking insists the basic round ones are all anyone needs, much like those horrid recessed ceiling downlighters.

Get an electrician to fit a fluorescent tube light with no shield and attach a dimmer switch to it to get the desired lighting level (can you dim one of these?).

I bought these led strips http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/3011940... in white for use inside my wardrobes when I get around to building them (ots of other projects first).

They might do the job if you can lose the wiring tidily under the cabinet, and not too expensive either. They are not a visual enhancement to be honest but do provide a good effect.

They do a multi-changing colour version too if that is your thing.

not had a lot of joy even looking through those - but I have found one company who does exactly what I wanted - Hera - only they don't appear to have general stockists in the uk and aren't answering in Germany!

Goolging for 'Hera lighting' shows several distributors in the USA, if that's any help?

Yeah noted the ones in the USA - I'm waiting for them to get up and turn their computers on smile

This is the sort of thing I'm after:

Not exact on review, but the closest by a very long way. I really wanted halogen / something other than fluorescent to get decent warmth in the light colour, but thought if that's all I can get I'll try some filter film / paint on the lens!

You can't dim a fluorescent without a dimmable ballast.

Fluros are great lamps to dim as the colour profile doesnt change, only the intensity but its a faff finding space for the ballast in most residential applications.

Beware that a US product will be 110V and not 230.

Fluorescent lamps come in different colour temperatures. For a more "halogen" look, try looking for one that is described as "warm white".

If you're after warmth a cold cathode might be a better option.
