Alternate to wood flooring.
Discussion
At the moment I'm planning on having high quality wood flooring installed at the end of the year in our hallway and living room, total cost ~2K of which I'm quite happy to pay, cost of wood is £65 m2.
However, being a tight jock if could get quality flooring for cheaper I'd be even happier! I had a look at laminate at £35 m2 and was surprisingly impressed with the quality...and 10 year warranty!
The house is one year old with two adults and three small dogs living in it so not a massive amount of traffic, we're quite prepared for the scratches that may appear on the wood with the dogs so that is not a massive concern for us. Is there anything else worth considering? Would love a pure wool carpet but the upkeep is too much and I'm not sure what else is out there!
FWIW we're not after anything ultra modern, more a relaxed homey style.

What wood are you going to use?We went to see the people who laid wood flooring in our hall and dining room as we are going to have another room done. Rough price for solid oak £44 m². Hopefully getting the correct price after a site visit (Friday).
Amtico do some stunning flooring. http://www.amtico.co.uk/pages/home.aspx
You should be able to get wood (by wood I mean real wood) for less that 65m2.
For higher traffic areas (hallway) it might be worth considering going with a laminate rather that a solid wood or engineered board as it will take more abuse without looking tatty.
Personally I'm a big fan of engineered boards (timber veneer of your choice over an mdf core. Means the floor can be laid as a floating floor rather than having to be glued down with Sika or similar.
Is 65m2 laid or are you doing the install?
Oh, and take the skirting boards off and trim the architrave please.
If your doing it yourself ebay is well worth a look...

The trouble with some of the laminated/engineered floors is that quite a lot of dogs dont like it, because of grip, some dogs even worry over it. Have you checked out some of the new stone/concrete type tiling which is really next years big thing. Same a wood it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
