We've been looking at building a conservatory(hardwood, 3m x 4m) and we are just starting to get quotes in. I was wondering if anyone had a feeling for what a sensible price would be?

We've had two figures in, which were not what I would have considered as sensible, and I was wondering if it was me that was wrong, or just salesmen chancing a high price cause house is in a decent area.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

One in hardwood will be at least double that.

That's kind of what I thought, but the quotes to date have been nearer 4x that......which is what motivated me to come and check if I was totally underestimating.

Well a friend of mine has one that is approximately the same size as what you're asking for (3m x 4m) and I think it was around £25k - and that was at mates rates. Obviously style, number of openings, type of roof etc. are all factors so I'm not really surprised that you're getting quotes that are £30+k. However, it's worth getting several quotes as when we had ours built, the most expensive quote was three times that of the cheapest - no doubt they were using the postcode as a guide to what we could afford.

We've got a 5m x 6m (ish) conservatory in uPVC coated aluminium (but actually decent stuff). TWas around £28K IIRC. Which was cheap. We were quoted comparative prices up to £35K (ish). This was three or four years ago.

HTH.

I can do pictures and check prices with the Mrs this evening if you're interested.

I tried to PM you, but it won't let me.

Whereabouts are you based in Avon?

Our 3.5m x 6m, south-facing, uPVC conservatory cost 18k but that's with (very effective) heat-reflecting and heat-retaining glass throughout, a glass roof with two rooflights, opening windows all round and one of the shorter walls in brick. The price included planning permission, electrics, plastering, two radiators plumbed into the house, and a screed floor. That's from a well-known and well-respected local company here in Sussex. Everest quoted 23k. The whole job took three weeks in Jan/Feb 2006.

Hope that helps.

Sorry about that. Your post has made me realise how horribly out of date my profile was - My e-mail address was an old one, now updated; and I'm no longer in Avon, I moved from Bristol to Edinburgh a while ago.

Thanks for the offer, but there's no need to go to the effort of doing pictures. It's useful just to get an idea of what quotes to expect, for a given size/material. Based on yours and others' posts, it sounds like the quotes I've had may be slightly on the high side, but not as outrageous as I originally thought.

Cheers

Ahh, no worries.

Could have steered you in the right direction for a quote if you were still in Bristol wink
