I've just taken delivery of a new carpet for the bedroom, a fairly decent one (IMO), 80/20 wool mix, 60oz, so I'd like to get decent underlay.

I've got 'duralay 75' down, it's around 3yrs old, should it still be ok? It still feels 'spongy' but I honestly don't know how it compares to how it felt new.

If not, what are your experiences of rubber vs pu vs felt in terms of durability and longevity?

Can't suggest which underlay is best but have a look here for good prices.

We just got 45 square metres of tredaire and it was less than half the price the carpet place were going to charge us!

Compare the areas that get heavy traffic with the corners - any difference?

Cheers guys, the prices on that website are great, at those prices I might just change it anyway, as the heavy wear areas are a little flatter than the edges on the current underlay.

Still doesn't help me decide between the different types available! I'll prob go with the traditional rubber waffle as the others are very much unknown quantities, unless anyone else has any views?

My experience is very limited but I had cheap foam-backed underlay in places in my house and it collapsed into a sticky mess in 3-4 years. By contrast my mother had rubber underlay from an expensive furniture shop and it was perfect after 20 years.

Cheers for the link, lots of recommendations of cloud 9 there - so AV forums are the place to ask about carpet underlay, rather than motoring forums hehe

I work for the company that produces the Duralay, Tredaire brands of underlay, so here's a quick rundown:

Crumb rubber is the most hard wearing, long lasting underlay. It is made from roughly 80% recycled car tyre crumb and there is approximately 1 tyre in every square metre of it. It is ideal for heavy wear areas, though perhaps not as comfy as other softer types of underlay. It is not unusual for crumb underlays to last 25 years.
It is the best for high wear areas such as stairs or areas where furniture is moved around such as dining rooms as it's recovery characteristics are superb and this protects the carpet from wear.

Sponge Rubber (the type you are talking about) is made from rubber/latex. It can be softer than crumb but I'd advise to buy at least 90lb. 75lb is a bit light IMHO, unless it is for a guest room that sees very little footfall.
There is a lot available. If you buy a decent one it will make you carpet feel very comfortable underfoot. Tredaire Colours Red is the most comfortable underlay bar none, but obviously not the cheapest.

PU foam underlay is made from the foam offcuts from the car & furniture industry. It is heavily pushed by many carpet shops & fitters for the simple reason that it is lighter to carry. This is an advantage to them, but does you no good at all. that said it is still a decent underlay, just don't use it in heavy wear/high traffic areas.

If you want a full guide for what underlays work best for each room, you can download our Underlay Selection Guide from the company website here...

http://www.interfloor.com/sales_marketing_support....

It also contains information regarding gauge, Tog ratings and dB ratings. All things you may want to bear in mind.

All our underlays are BS rated. Beware of carpets shops selling you cheap imported Chinese stuff that has no BS classification as using it may well void any manufacturers guarantee you have should there be a problem with the carpet.

If you need to know anything else feel free to ask, but whatever you do don't buy Cloud 9 - that's made by the competition. smile

PH is great isn't it?!

There's a question about patents and a patents lawyer turns up.

There's a question about underlay and an underlay bloke turns up!
