My roof is covered in moss, I hadnt really thought about it much but since the gutters are getting clogged up quite often I did a bit of research. It seems the moss causes quite a few problems other than looking messy it bores into the tiles and moisture gets retained and it basically reduces the useful life of your roof.

I did a quick check on the interweb and found companies that do the 'four stage clean process' but no mention of cost. Has anybody on here used any of these companies ( such as Roofbrite etc ) and if so how much did it cost, where you happy with the results. I own a four bed detached house.

Many thanks

We live in a 1930's house with a very lush lawn of moss on the roof. In the last 70 years this has caused nothing other than the odd blocked gutter - I went up on the roof last year and the tiles are fine. I suspect a lot of the "problems" are just sales pitch.

We had our roof replaced recently - I asked the guys about moss and their view is that it does no harm.

One of the biggest cons going, basically they jetwash your tiles and then paint them, I bet you could re tile the roof for not far of the price they quote. Also the moss does no harm to the roof apart from you having to clean the gutters out more often.

thanks for the feedback, the painting of the tiles is a con according to other websites ( Diynot.com etc )I did a bit more digging, loads of old people conned out of £5k+ etc

OK, so moss isnt a problem, I went up on my ladders today and the gutters have some moss in but not alot, looks like I will just clean them out and hope for the best!

If you have continuous falls of moss into the gutter, you should consider fitting leaf guards over the top of the gutter. Be ready for lumps of moss falling on to the floor needing to be swept up, though. wink
