We are moving house and have removers booked to pack and remove/deliver. Clearly cups of tea/coffee and a few biscuits but a friend has said we should also tip them :gawp: really? They are a national chain of removal firms.

Is it the same as a restraunt? enlighten me, I dont move house very often and the last time we did it ourselves.

I've never heard of that.

We just moved a few months ago with a national firm. They couldn't wait to get away, hardly the behaviour of someone looking for a tip.

My old man is a Removal Man well he drives the lorry now as he can't really do the hoofing anymore.

Alot of people would tip them and they were always grateful and to some of the young blokes doing the lifting and extra £10 can be alot.

Some don't tip and they just grumble a bit out of ear shot.

I can't say I've moved often, but both times I've used a removal firm I've tipped them.

I've never used a removals company as I always hire a van and do it myself.

However, if I did and they were exceptional I would tip them but not as a matter of course.
Much like any other service provider really.

I recently had a garage built and was delighted with the end result, the attitude of the guys, their work rate, everything... So as they were leaving I slipped them fifty quid each as a personal thank you.

I wouldn't do it just because I "thought it was the done thing" though.

We've moved twice in the last year, on both occasions necessitating an overnight stay in the lorry for a couple of the removal men.

I gave them £20 each time and told them where the nearest pub was, they seemed happy with that (and a couple of beers each would have made kipping in the cab of the lorry more bearable too I suspect).

We moved about 18 months ago and used a small local firm who quoted a quarter of that a national chain did! They bought 4 guys in all so how they made any money on the deal I don't know!

anyway - the guys were great, really made an effort. I tipped them a fair wedge at the end and said have beers on me.

From memory I think I tipped about £30 each but it was because the service was good and the quote had been so cheap that the younger lads couldn't have been earning much.

I normally tip them but recently i got fleeced >£600 for moving 4 rooms + some garage stuff .. and the b*?!!ds wanted more money for making them wait an hour or two longer - so yeah if they charged a puny amount in the first time, then perhaps a tip.

The three guys who moved us a couple of years ago were extremely well mannered, friendly and helpful, even when the silly biotch whose place we were moving into decided a small transit van and two family members was their chosen mode of snail-like transport to get all their st out of 'our' new house. Our removal guys had to hang about, moving a bit here, a bit there, working around snot-brain and her dumb family, as she slowly moved out.

(At one point I got a bit 'cross' and told the stupid girl it was now my house and if she showed any more surly attitude I'd simply throw her st out onto the road.)

I'd had reservations what to expect with the removals company, never having used one before, but there was no grumbling, no surly attitude, just lots of advice, politeness, help etc. I gave them £20 each when they left. smile

A total of 8 guys turned up to do our recent move (essentially 2 teams helping each other get the jobs done quicker) so I bunged the head guy a ton and told him to figure it out between them. They did a bloody good job, mind. We literally opened the door for them and they came in, packed, loaded and fked off for the night, then reappeared the following day at the new place to unload.

We had a bed/settee delivered last year, and it was a real, real bd to get into the house, when we get rid it'll get sawn up in situ. I felt sorry for the couple of lads that brought it. They got it in, amazingly without damaging anything, so I gave them twenty quid.

I tipped the guys who moved us, again a small local firm, half the price of the nationals. On the first day (packing) there was only one of them instead of 2) as they had been called in by a national company who found that they couldn't get their lorry to the house it was meant to be unloading at! So the local guys were called in with their smaller lorry to do shuttle trips between the big lorry and the house. The local guys remarked thats the advantage of a local company they'll always check the access first!

Anyway they did a very good job, in spite of the guy that was moving out using a transit and a dog to move all his crap! So de
served a tip. With tip was stil substantially less than the national guys!
