Just a quick bit of research regarding a new business we have, when buying a new home did you ever consider or want to buy a barn conversion above all else?

Any votes are really appreciated.

Thanks

I bought a barn and converted it. Little point in buying one already converted IMHO, if you're gonna do it, make sure it's done right.

They take time, money and commitment but it's worth it...

My best mates have one, and if I am honest, I hate it. No character, upside down and over priced. But they like it, and that's all that matters.

If I got one I'd want to convert it myself to my exact spec.

Why "No but I might now" what's changed?

Its rare to find one where the layout actually works for a family to be honest. I'd second doing it yourself. I've got some barns but a) I use them and b) I can't be arsed tbh...

A whole farm near me has been developed into several properties..really nice...apart from the price tag!

That's another thing, I don't get the point of having a barn conversion, living out in the sticks and having bloody neighbours right beside you!

I know a chap who is converting a steading at the moment to a one family house. It's 1600m2! They were originally planning on making it 3 or 4 but decided they didn't want to share it laugh

Ours is a c-shaped building and will be between 350 and 400m2 when we're done. The layout works perfectly well for a family - not really sure what the previous comment about barns not suiting families is about...

I bought one. Had to move as not very child friendly.

Usually very easy to sell (ours sold in 3 days) - doubled our money in 3 years.

You have an appropriate name...

hehe

What made it non-child-friendly?

no, however the owner of Sam Smiths (I want to call him Harvey, but that isn't him) bought a Barn Conversion so he could turn it back into a barn

Wanted a barn back in the early 80's but even then the costs were out of my range. Now 'up-north' a barn with PP start at 250k and can be a lot more (no foundations and even with structural problems the PP will not let you knock it down) Found Grade 11 mill and converted / extended part of that, still in the green belt and next to stream overrlooking golf course (no i do'nt play).

I've done schemes for several clients, the planners are very strict regarding openings and want the barn conversion to look like a 'barn' so you have to compromise on the layout so there not for everyone.

Just my thoughts.

My parents had an offer accepted on a barn at £250k (just the barn and 1/2 acre maybe?) sadly it didn't go through, can't remember why.

It's currently for sale at £1.3m having been converted.

One of my clients has converted several barns to an impressive specification, quite nice going out on site to see them.

I've always fancied one, but i'll never be able to afford one.

fk me, they're a lot cheaper up here. I bought my steading, a croft and 6 acres of agricultural land for £320k.
