I'm currently running my (incapacitated) mother's affairs, and from this Saturday her empty house will have a new tenant in it.

The phone line rental/calls is currently with TalkTalk who take money monthly by DD from my mother's account. If I do nothing, the tenant's phone bills will come out of her account!

I've tried e-mailing Talktalk's 'customer support' three times in the last week and had no reply. Now there are only 3 days left. I don't want have the line disconnected because the tenant will then just have to pay to have it reconnected, but I'm stumped as to the best way to get TalkTalk to change the bank from which funds are taken.

Any ideas? How do tenancies work for phones?

When we were in rented houses, getting the phone line reconnected was free. When we moved out we called them and said we weren't living there any more, and they disconnected it again. Once you've done that make sure to cancel the direct debit otherwise they'll probably keep taking the line rental.

Have you tried calling talk talk rather than e-mail?

It may have to come to that - I'm just dreading waiting for hours in a queue on an 0845 number which I get charged for frown

It's typical of Consumer vs Corporation. For the sake of a two-minute chat to sort it out, it's going to turn into a 6-month battle...

Try this site http://www.saynoto0870.com/ for some 0800 and regional numbers for Talk Talk

Disconnect it. Tried to help out some renters with a phone line recently, ended up costing me five hundred quid.

As usual it's a long story - have the line disconnected then there is no question about who is responsible when it's reconnected.

Cut it off now, don't hesitate.
