20 tonnes of Cumbrian Rock - is there a market for them?
Discussion
About 15 years ago, my Dad went up to Cumbria to a company that sold rocks. He wanted some decent sized ones for a feature Koi pond in his garden.
These rocks were water worn from fields in the area.
When they were delivered they were huge and needed a Teleporter to take them off the lorry and put into place.....
As the house will be going on the market, he has decided to remove the pond and fill it in. This means he wants to remove the rocks. I have said they would be worth something to someone due to the fact that it is now forbidden to uproot these rocks from their habitation. (so I am informed).
So, is there a call for mahoosive Cumbrian rock?
The rock will be Westmoreland water worn limestone.
Freshly quarried material currently sells for around £200-250 per ton, but this is the French equivalent of the Cumbrian stone.
As you have correctly stated, there is no longer any harvesting of this limestone in the protected areas of the UK as it forms a rare habitat known as 'limestone pavement' which is incredibly valuable for wildflower species diversity.
