I'm in the process of replacing all the doors hinges in my house but I'm currently a bit stuck. The property was built in the 30's and probably has the original doors and fitting. I took one of the hinges to a local DIY store and found what apparently matched. They're 75/76mm butt hinges so I bought all the replacements. However when I went to fit them I noticed a slight difference to the ones I'd just bought - something I didn't notice in when buying them. Bascially, they have 3 holes - two in line and the middle one off-centre (the standard fitting). The problem is that one my original hinges the off-centre middle hole is closer to the hinge itself, whereas on every other (new) hinge I can find (both online and in several stores) the off-centre middle hole is closer to the edge of the fitting (i.e. further away from the actual hinge). Therefore, the new hinges don't fit. They're so close to fitting that any new screw hole would rip into the existing hole. But they're far enough away from fitting that there's no way to make them fit.

It's pretty hard to explain the difference so I'll try and draw a little diagram. The ':' are the centre of the hinge and the 'o' are the screw holes. Ignore the '-' as it wont let me do the spaces without them smile

Does anyone know if these older style hinges have a specific name or description? I've searched all over the place and just can't find any like for like replacements. I'm not looking for antique style or any other really old style hinges. Just basic, stainless steel 75/76mm butt hinges. Any help would be much appreciated!

Do you mean your original fittings are like this : http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/Products/Hinges...

but the new ones are like this? http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/Products/Hinges...

Maybe purchase the ones from the first link?

Where did you get your hinges from?

That's it. But I was looking for them in steel - as that's what the originals were/are. The hinges I bought (which don't fit) were from a very orange DIY store.

ETA: Thanks for finding those btw smile

Just repair the existing screw holes ? easy to do just cut a wooden plug slightly larger than the existing screw hole ,put some wood glue on it and then tap it in ,wait for the glue to dry and then trim off the bit of the plug that is sitting proud.

You might find that the new hinge is thinner than the old one and you need to pack it out to get it flush with the frame.cardboard is your friend for this.

frown any idea of the era of the hinges you are looking to replace or any identifying markings on them?
