Last night we were watching a film, surround sound on but bass off when our pain in the arse neighbour came round to complain that we had 'woken then all up' it was 12:20, my son was asleep in the room above and didn't hear a thing. How best to deal with this?

If it's 12:20 then say sorry and turn it down.

If you share a party wall and woke them up at 12:20 then perhaps it's you who is the PITA neighbour wink I'd certainly be pissed if you woke me up at that time.

I guess he wouldn't come around and make up a story that you had woken him, so he must have been woken or at least been unable to sleep because of the noise, so turn it down.

Kids can sleep thought anything sometimes so the fact the little one stayed asleep in the room isn't much of a yardstick.

Do you sit yards from the TV with it turned up loud? Sit closer, turn a it down a bit and stay on better terms?

Turn it down? I wouldn't dream of watching my TV through the surround system at past 10.30pm.

It might not seem loud to you, but a noisy TV through a wall can sound dreadful - even if you think the bass is turned down.

And for those that don't, what is wrong with a little courtesy?

And if it was a PHer on here complaining of his noisy neighbour, you can imagine the disproportionate responses suggested.

How to deal?

At that time, they must have been tired and when we are tired we all get pretty grumpy, yes? So go round and apologise for making so much noise at twenty past midnight.

It is irrelevant whether you thought it was noisy or not, the neighbour clearly did and an apology will go a long way to ensuring you don't get into a silly feud with them.

remember that speakers near a wall can make the wall act as a sounding board so it could be noisier in their house than you realise.

Turn it down.

Many people have home systems that you could hear in someone else's detached house...

Sound transmits through different materials and parts of a building differently, so what you may not hear upstairs may be amplified next door.

Are your surround sound seakers attached to thier wall?

I wouldn't want to be hearing my neighbours tv at 12:20am whether it woke me up or not!!!!!

You simply should not HAVE your tv that loud, regardless of bass or volume, or surround sound, or time, or whomever is sleeping through it in your own house.

Your son will grow up accepting loud tv as normal!

TURN IT DOWN, YOU ARE THE BAD NEIGHBOUR!

I've got to say it would take a hell of alot for me to go round to my neighbour in the middle of the night to complain about the noise, and most people are reluctant to get into an argument with their neighbour. So for them to come round at that time suggests there is a real problem - they've got nothing to gain by arguing with you over something that doesn't really bother them.

Swallow your pride in the interest of a reasonable relationship with your neighbour, go round there with a bottle of something. And what someone else said about leaving the TV and surround on at normal volume when you do sounds like a good idea. Means you can work out if its worth doing something more than just keeping the volume down - like moving the speakers etc as others have suggested.
