Right I am clearing away huge amounts of soil and rubble.

I have found a company who can take it away on a grab truck which can take 15 tonnes at a time (which seem standards) - question is how do I know when I have 15 tonnes?

I am pretty sure I have more than they will be able to take, but i dont wnat to cart it all out incase it is too much.

On the plsu side I have 15 bulk builders vags - which can all time 1 ton in weight.

Now I guess they are just rated to take 1 tonne in weight, so if I filled them all to 1 tonne I would be OK.

Thing is I am guesisng when they are filled to 1 tonne they are never 'brimmed' - so if I fill up each of the 1 tonne bags to the top I guess I will be over 1 ton in weight - but I geuss they must have space on their truck to take 15 full bags.. ?

One thing to bear in mind is if the soil is dry or wet. One of the bags will contain anything up to 2 tons depending on what you put in and if it's wet or not, that's why I am wary of buying sand or ballast etc by the ton as you don't get as much if it's been raing a lot.
I think you could safely say one of the bags you describe will not have much less than a ton of rubble or soil if full.
Also the driver should know when he has the maximum weight on as if he doesn't have some form of on board weighing system his experience should guide him.

Most bathroom scales go up to 20 stone, so max one of those out and them multiply it up smile

You are looking at about 2 tonne per cubic metre.
If you are digging out then I think you need to add a third as the material is looser when dug out. If you are able to use this calculation then you will need to find how many cubes the lorry can take.

The bags you refer to may not be usable. Bags are rated for a tonne when new and are for one use only. They also bio degrade so the driver may not accept them as it is his problem if they split.

The OP said he was using a grab truck so the bags will be irrelevant for picking the stuff up and were only a guide for volume/weight.

yes its a grab truck but i am hoping they will just be able to pick up the bulk bags on the hooks - otherwises its a hassle trying to individually grab the stuff from each bag - but it is soemthing they can do i guess

I dont know if the 'claw' is big enough to get round the entire bag?

they have either option

i currently have 16 bags out there! hopefully most will get taken.

Does the company collecting this know it is in bags? They might not be impressed as it might limit where they can dump it! A well operated grab lorry leaves amazing little amount on the ground once it has grabbed it all up.

it wasn;t an option for us to leave it loose, it would have created a masisve mess and ended up all over the road.

some of the stuff inside the bulk bag is actually inside plastic bags as well because thats how we were 'holding' it before we took it out front.

i'll check tomorrow!
