Lawn Mowers

My parent need a new law mower, looking to spend around 300 quid.

Any ideas?

We don't need a ride on one or anything powered by a rover V8, just a mower.
Me mam has a tendacy of slicing through wires so they normally use a toro petrol jobby. Must be self proppeled and not to hard to use.

The less work the better.

Any help much appreciated.

Me dad has his eyes on a Mountfield Sp536, budget can go up a little if needs be. He loves Toro's, thinks they're great.

Many lawnmowers haves a name like mountfield but are powered by a Honda. I have a self propelled that I got for £300 with a Honda engine from focus.

Maybe a bit late for you, but I plan on getting the Mountfield from BandQ at the weekend for £219.

The Honda one is now about 5 years old and starts First or second pull every time.. Even after being left in the shed all winter

My Hayter has a B&S engine, not had problems in the three years I've had it, although I do run it every month or so during the winter.

The most likely cause of lawnmowers not starting is dead petrol

Looked last night and that model had a third off. Now gone back up in price....bks.

Thats the difference..

I never touch the Honda during the winter.. Just shove it in the shed and stick an old blanket over it

My Stihl brushcutter gets the same treatment otherwise it's a sod to start in the spring as the petrol clogs in the carb.

Briggs & Stratton get a hard time, but I've got an old (10yrs approx) Qualcast rotary with a B & S engine, have never serviced it or changed the oil, although I do check the level - it starts each spring with old petrol after sitting idle in my garage for 6 months, it refuses to die!

P.S. even if you reserve to collect at B & Q, I'm 99% sure you don't guarantee the price, if it increases before you get round to the store you pay the higher price on the shelf.

i was told to shun new briggs & stratton stuff like the plague, the older stuff was supposedly fantastic, apparently the older engines had proper iron liners in the cylinders (they last for years!) but the new ones don't, the piston rings scrape themselves into the aluminium cylinder walls and so don't last anywhere near as long...

i have an old atco with a norton villiers engine, i haven't had it out of the shed for years as it's so damned heavy to get down the steps to the lawn (i use a crappy flymo but at least it's light as a feather )
