We're looking at a complete new kitchen in the near future as it's looking a little tired. What's the best gadget/feature you love about your kitchen and what's been a bit of a waste?

Best: Granite worktops
Worst: Rubbish taps

Best: Soft-close doors and drawers
Worst: Baumatic range cookers

Best: Under-cabinet lighting
Worst: Flourescent tube under-cabinet lighting

Best: Metal switch plates
Worst: Crappy half-depth socket boxes that make fitting nice metal switch plates a frikkin nightmare

FYI the area to the left of the post shows the name of the person posting. This saves valuable keyboard wear as the vast majority of us opt to omit the "Cheers MM" bit.

OK, enough! laugh

The best feature in my kitchin is the large island in the middle, the hob and oven are included in it. It's great being able to stand at the cooker and not have your back to the room.
Worst - I wish I had space for a bigger fridge freezer, there's only a 60cm gap despite the kitchen being quite big.

Cheers,

FT.

Soft close hinges and expensive drawers are good.
Previous owners put an espresso machine in (cheap, fully manual jobby, not a plumbed in beans to cup one) its rubbish.

Granite surface is nice, but you only need to look at it and its dirty..

Big range cooker is good, but the warmer plate and griddle bits dont get much use, wok burner would have been more use (again chosen by previous owners)

fancy fully electronic toaster,, motor winds the toast in and out, pulls the roast back in to keep it warm if you dont take it out after a few seconds.. sounds good, is actually rubbish, seems to have an intermittent fault with a relay and sometimes doesnt pull the toast down..

cooker hood, dont bother if you cant vent it outside.. look nice, but also a bugger to clean

Best; Black granite worktops I guess but a nightmare to keep looking great

Worst; The cooker hood casing I keep hitting my head on the corner of.

Best; Simple quarry tiled floor

Worst: quarry tile sealant which discoloured after a week

Best this:

Worst features are the stty work tops and crappy doors both chosen by the previous owner and I can't afford to replace them.

Best: The Le Mans corner pull outs.
The height - @5cm higher than normal as we're both tall, means no back ache washing up.

Worst: The spots along one side are too far out so they cast shadows. There's enough light in most situations but when sunlight is streaming through the window the contrast between that and the spots is a pain as the knife causes a shadow putting your fingers at risk. IYSWIM.

Have you tried lamps with a different beam angle?

best:

soft close mechanisms

range cooker
stoves slimline extractor

above fitted into chimney breast so you only see the controls for the extractor and not the exhaust tower, looks the nuts.

worst:

wooden worktop. sanded/resealed it twice already in a year. a right PITA.

really tall wall units. i am 6'2" and still can't reach the top shelf so its just dead space.

ETA: in any kitchen -

Best: Gas Hob

Best bits: the whole lot to be honest as I designed it to my exact needs but if I had to point out a few bits:

Good bits:

Corien Worktops and sink are brill
6cm higher worktops as we are both tall, also the hob run worktop is 70cm deap instead of the normal 60cm
Glass splashbacks
Conceled extractor
Induction Hob
LED mood lighting
All the appliances are hidden apart from the cookers

Bad bits:

Because it is a very simple looking design you have to keep it looking tidy

It wouldn't make a difference as the spots are recessed in the ceiling about 800mm out as there are wall units. So as I'm chopping my head and shoulders cast a shadow. The obvious solution is to replace the spots under the wall units with strip lightsyuck

I don't want to move the chopping board as it's to the right of the hob and near the sink.
