I'm looking to carpet a hallway and three bedrooms (two large and one small) in a new house. Where's the best place to buy carpet and underlay?? Nothing special, just ordinary good quality bedroom carpet.

I've used big chain stores in the past to buy carpet with "free fitting", and they've been OK, but I never felt like I was getting a great deal.

I was thinking about using an online carpet supplier like http://www.wilsonsflooringdirect.co.uk/ or http://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk and then finding a local carpet fitter to do the rest.

What's the going rate for carpet fitting?? I was thinking £5-6 per sqm - is this reasonable, or way off the mark??

Just done said rooms/hallway on a refurb. Cost was £1100 all-in from Carpet-right, med quality. Wait for the offers, usually every couple of months or so.

I went into some big carpet place today and everyhting was £50-60/sq.m yikes

Must have been the day they had to sell at 'retail price', haha, to comply with Trading Standards. Slippery devils.

Just ordered a new carpet for the lounge/stairs and landing.... We went with our local indenpendant shop

Lounge is 4m x 4.3m and the landing is 1.7m x 1.9m. £400 all in, includes cloud 9 underlay and fitting.

We were lucky that they had a piece in stock that is just about big enough (very very close) and that I know the guy that owns the shop.

My wife's uncle is a carpet fitter (just fitted Gary Linikers Fiancee's new carpet).... I'm sure he'd be able to sort you out.

But what was it made of? I'm heading for 80% wool, 50oz stuff.

I've got my local mobile carpet bod running about for me. The hardest part is matching the colour of the old carpet (a velour), which was originally described as 'cedar'. It's actually impossible to describe - everything looks beige, orange or pink when they offer it up! Wonder if you can specify carpet colours like Pantones or RGB?

It's 50% wool, 50% Polypropylene and it's a "Heavy Domestic".
