I have heard that it is possible to build without planning consent if the ridge line of the roof is less than 2m and you are more than 15m away from the main building on the plot. Is this right?

What about if the main building is listed?

You are allowed to undertake certain works on most residential dwellings under what is called 'Permitted Development Rights'.

The rules are a little complicated, so I won't try to describe them all here, but you'll find an interactive guide on the Planning Portal

Note, however, that listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas or other controlled areas (eg. AONB's) do not have Permitted Development rights.

Thanks. That scuppers that idea then...

What about a shed? Are you allowed to put up a shed?

It is the listing that will be the problem. Once you get the listed building people involved, you either get an absolute, irrational "NO" or you have to have handmade tiles from some artisan in the Cotswolds who only works on Wednesdays when there is an "R" in the month.

All I want is to move a couple of large sheds from my back garden to round behind the pool house. No-one can see either. But messing about with a listed building is a criminal offence.

You would appear to have answered your own question.

Moving the sheds would appear not unreasonable.

Alterations to roof may be possible but it will require Listed Building consent.
Approval will be dependent upon the nature of the building and proposals as well as the reasonableness, or otherwise, of the Conservation Officers.

And, yes, a criminal offence to fiddle without approval.
The enforcement officers can be fun too, ask me how I know.........;)
