I have a really annoying noise in my house. I *think* it is simply something that is getting caught during the normal expansion / contraction of the building in the day / night - question is, how the feck do I track it down? it's only happens a few times in the evening, and it's a short sharp "crack" sound - imagine flicking a floorboard with a ruler.

Obviously burning the house down is one method of removing the problem but I'd like something a little less invasive..

Silly answer...set a mic up in every room, use a usb mixer and something like audacity/cubase and see which mic returns the highest volume when the "crack" occurs...you may be able to at least find the room it's coming from....told you it was a silly answer...smile
