After a lot of neglect I have recently started to sort the lawn out in our back garden. I've done one weed n feed treatment which sorted most of it out, and I've managed to grow some fresh grass from seed in some areas.

I now have a few spots where the moss was, which I raked out when it went black, but these areas are now bare some look like they have algae on them. What's the best way to sort this, the next batch of seed I put down on these spots has never grown.

If its only a small area you could buy a few rolls of Turf from B&Q, £2.50 each, cut to size, break up the bare earth, put turf on top, walk on it, water it often. Instant fix.

Would these patches be in heavy shade, or damp?

Moss is not a problem, it's a symptom of an underlying problem.

The worst part is mainly in shade and seems to be very damp, which has been made worse by watering it to try and grow the grass seed.

Nature's telling you that grass is not a suitable plant for those conditions smile Even if you use turf, it will eventually go back to how it was. Soooo... try to reduce shade by cutting back overhanging treese and shrubs, and improve drainange by spiking with a fork (or hollow-tine doofah) and brushing sharp sand into the holes. After about 10 years, it should improve, in theory... or concrete the bd and put a statue on it biggrin

The green stuff is a plant which grows where it is damp and shady.

I would try and dry the area up first by taking some of the topsoil out, dumping it and mixing up a new topsoil mix with new topsoil and some sharp sand.

After putting that back I would sow some 'shady place' grass seed. B&Q do it, and also some specialists on the net.
