At the second attempt, and this time after 6 months on the market, and reducing the asking price several times, we've finally accepted an offer on our house. The offer? A smidge above what we paid for our house 5 years ago. 
To all of you great and good people out out there - please cross your fingers with us so that we have as pain-free sale as possible!
At last we can now start to look for a new place in earnest, though we're happy to sit on what's left of our equity, rent for the time being and see what shows up.
As for green shoots, our estate agents have been overwhelmed recently by viewings and offers. Their opinion is that buyers feel prices are bouncing along the bottom and consequently the market is starting to become very active.
For me, it's the best news in a long while.
