Just wondering if this is a good quote before we have the work carried out.

Powermax155 was condemned by BG on Friday, and disconnected. I phoned a plumber who came on Saturday and advised the 37CDi would be a good replacement.

I see that they are about £1000 online, so I presume the £1200 is for the installation and any consumables...

He will need to remove existing boiler and dispose, then reroute flue to outside wall. He will remove existing roof vent/put roof tiles on where current vent is. Will also service gas fire while here also.

Just wondering if this is excessive, plumber says it is a couple of days work but is willing to start tomorrow so we are without HW for as little a time as possible.

I don't mind if I am paying 5-10% over for the quick attention to the job, but just wanted to check it is a fair price.

Doesn't sound too bad to me, although I found that when I had mine replaced last year everyone told me it should cost around £1,200 to do although no gas fitter would do it for that price. Well thats not quite true as British Gas did! However the only reason BG did it for that proce was because their service care team was out to us so much they wondered why we hadn't had boiler replaced. When we said whats the point when you want £3,500 for a new one but are prepared to keep the old one going for £120 a year? They then said they would install a new one for cost price of £1,200.

A local fitter I know said the absolute minumum he could do it for was £1,900, so your price doesn;t seem too bad.

Thanks Chris

(Sorry forgot to put a 'thanks in advance for any advice' in the OP).

I heard that BG charge £3 or 4k for a boiler install so didn't even ask them to quote.

I'd say that's ok then - towards the top of the spectrum, but not outrageous.

Don't think you will get a hugely better quote, however in reality its not going to cost him much over a grand himself. I could purchase the boiler for a figure beginning with a 7, add to that another £200 or so for tube/fittings & flue, and then a days labour (assume £200). All plus VAT (assuming he's registered). Any extra's on boiler ?

Not bad boilers Worcester to be honest, so just make sure he's gas safe registered, etc.

I'm not too sure BG fitted a £1000 boiler for £1200...

I saw some local guys advertising on Ebay.

I supplied the boiler and flue myself from B&Q for £500.

They converted my system to combi took out and disposed of the old system and included all pipework and two guys worked all day for about £600.

Here's their site: http://www.thegasteam.co.uk/Boilerq.html

I am pleased to report they did! However only because it was installed by the service care team, and not the sales team. The repairers pointed out to their bosses that they would save a fortune by fitting a new boiler, especially as the previous one needed a new part alledgedly costing £700! In the first 3 months of last year they visited us 21 times! Whilst the previous boiler was notionally only 8 years old, it was in fact less as during the 3 years we had lived in the house with it they had replaced every part at least once part from the last bit to go. Many parts had been replaced twice!

The moral of tyhe story is if you have an unreliable boiler get British Gas Service Cover and then work on the repairmen to get it replaced cheap!
