The main shared sewer crosses my land in the back garden as well as many other houses. I have noticed that on of my fences is starting to dip a bit directly in line with this sewer. There is a manhole to said sewer at the side of my house with thames water stamped on it and we have had issues upstream of my house with this sewer backing up. I'm aware that the drainage pipes to this sewer are my responsibility but what about the main shared sewer, is this Thames waters's responsibility if something happens to is?

Quite simply, yes.

Quite simply, not necessarily.

Theres a difference between a "main" sewer and a "shared line."

If the line to which you're referring is actually the shared drain, then it all boils down to when your house was built and if the drains have been replaced since then. Shared drainage built prior to 1937 is Thames responsibility, shared drainage after that is the responsibility of those people on the line.

That said, it could just be a main that happens to run through your back garden. If so it would be Thames' responsibility.

The easy way to find out is to ring them up - they have mapping software that shows where their mains run.

I'm in a helpful mood this evening. I've drawn a little diagram to show how the majority of terraced and semi detached houses drainage runs. Not everywheres like that, but in my experience the vast majority of houses have something alot like this:

(oh, and for the sake of argument the bottom of the pic is the front of the houses.)
