Building a studio, planning permission required?
Discussion
Looking to build a studio at the bottom of the garden. It will be 5m wide, 4m deep then with a 3m front area making one side 7m in total. Imagine an L shape. The plan is to build this out of a timber frame with blockwork, double skin wall, set with render. Built on a raft so not with perm foundations so classed as a temporary building, will this require planning permission? The building will be about 150ft away from our house, 100ft away from the house behind ours and is surrounded with trees. Will have a pitched rather than an A frame roof.
Ideas?

First off, just because it's on a raft doesn't mean it's a temporary building. The definition of temporary in Planning terms is a structure which is in place for not more than 28 days in any 12 month period, IIRC.
It will probably be treated as an outbuilding, hence normal rules of Permitted development apply. Check on the Planning Portal website for full details.

thanks! so you just plumb in dimensions et voila?
More or less, yes; Sketchup is a really quite powerful 3D sketching tool (even us professionals use it), but pretty simple to use. A couple of hours playing around with it should teach you enough of the basics to allow you to knock up a 3D model that is more than adequate for initial discussions with the Planners.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
