Hi all,

I am looking at moving into London into a house or flat share.

I have been looking over sites such as Gumtree and Spareroom, a lot of the places that are coming up seem pretty decent, but this being my first time doing something like this i was wondering if anyone can share their experiences?

Cheers!

PS Mods, please don't move this to one of the sub-forums just yet!

Had a PHer move into my flat in Clapham and was not too bad... still talk to him now and do the occasional drinks... was supposed to Le Mans, but he is being a pussy!!

Generally I dont like to live with SA/Kiwi/Ozzy girls as they seem to have their volume set on 11 all the time and the Saffer girls can be extremely racists without meaning it if they are new to the country for the first time.

Other than that all is good and if moving into London, you have a mandatory invite that is not allowed to be refused to the DD night at the end of the month (usually last thursday of the month). This is not an option for the London PHers as its got a fantastic cult following.

I found my House Share in Cambridge through Gumtree.

I went to a couple of houses and met the guys who lived in them but in the one I moved into I just felt relaxed as soon as I went there.

It was the best House Share I have ever been in, great guys and in a year there was never a crossed word between any of us, no disagreement and no arguments.

Don't think 'I'll move in with slutty birds/partyers for a good laugh' move in with the people you think you can get on with as you will be spending a lot of time with/around them and it can very quickly start to aggravate.

Also try and move in with people who are in a similar life/work situation so they can appreciate when you need to work/sleep/relax etc.

I always like these threads - I've been thinking about getting a lodger as soon as I get my next gaff sorted.

My ex used to have lodgers and they were fantastic:

1. Young professional female +good car banter -Boyfriend was a dick, thankfully he only came round once

2. Mid 30's doctor type, very chilled out +very clean tidy and civilised -Left a bath bomb in the bath and stained the enamel (genuine mistake)

3. Young teacher +great laugh, blended in with us really well no bad points at all!

When I was living in Fulham Loot wouldn't let us put 'No Labour Voters or Scum' in a flatshare advert which I thought was a bit churlish to be fair.

Off topic I know, but an ex of mine threw one of those red gelatine oil/perfume thingies in my bath once. I sat on it unknowingly, and thought I'd had a prolapse or something when I stood up irked

To give a bit more colour to this, before the convo deviates to anal prolapses... biggrin

I am currently living in a flat on my own in Essex. I have wanted to move to the city for a while mainly for the social scene. Being a bit closer to work wouldn't hurt either.

Since the social side of things where i live seems to have stalled somewhat, and moving into the city in a Flat / House share capacity would actually work out cheaper for me, this seems like a win-win situation!

Thanks for your comments so far!

where are you looking to move and when?

I know someone who is looking.... well not actually looking but it stops his mates using his flat as a hotel most weeks

I rent two rooms out in my house, all house mates found from www.easyroommate.com, been sweet for the 10 months since I started it no worries.

All young working people who have our own lives, in fact I only see on of them when he pays the rent as he works shifts, good as gold in the grand scheme of things, pays the mortgage and saves me rattling round in my house.

I rent a room at a house through using Easyroommate (that's not a description of the people you're likely to find on it by the way) and we've become very close friends.

The main thing is communication - you have to let them know if something annoys you and vice versa and it should be encouraged to do this also. There's no point bottling it up and then having a huge argument about something petty like borrowing some milk.

Set out the rules from the beginning and as long as people stick to them and generally have some manners you'll be fine and you'll really enjoy it.

Just joined that Easy Room Mate site. We'll see what that turns up.

I am looking for a place anywhere between Shoreditch to Stoke Newington as far west as Holloway. Pretty specific really although i have seen loads already via the sites i am using.

I will probably look to move mid July.

Better to do a houseshare where you meet all the occupants, I was in a house share where the landlord decided who moved in which meant the atmosphere changed as the mix of people changed. Also share with like minded people it is a bd if your housemates go out clubbing come in pissed and noisy if you are up early for work.

Done a few houseshares over the past few years, found my current place via Gumtree. Currently sharing with one other bloke, he works nights and I work 9-5 so I often don't see him for a couple of days at a time, and I have the house to myself from 9:30pm every week night, which is perfect! smile

I've also shared with 3 other people (all blokes) and would never do it again, I'm someone who likes to have peace and quiet to chill out etc. and love having the house to myself most of time, and although I was sharing with 2 mates, it was the third person who I didn't really get on with.

Only problem with sharing and renting is that the place never feels your own, I would imagine this is especially so if you're renting a room with the owner. I've been renting and sharing (apart from 5 months when I had a place to myself) for 4 years and would love a place of my own.

If you can, meet the prospective "sharee(s)" a couple of times before agreeing to move in, and see what hours they work/where they work etc to get and idea of what life will be like living with them.

Found my current place on GUmtree and been here just over a month - sharing with one other bloke a year younger than me.

He's at his missus' place long weekend every week leaving just me here and the girlfriend when she's about. Really sound guy who I met with a couple of times before moving in - zero bad points so far!

Property sharing experiences go something like this:

1. Was born, someone else did all the washing up and cleaning. Was pretty good, but had to share space with others.
2. Left home, went to university. Did my own washing up and cleaning, but some others I was sharing with still thought they were back in Stage 1. Not so good.
3. Left university and returned home. Someone else did washing up and cleaning, but I felt guilt this time.
4. Left home, got own place. Did my own washing up and cleaning, but didn't have to put up with anyone else's st.
5. Got married. I do washing up, wife does cleaning. Good compromise.
6. As stage 5 but add in 2 others who can't/won't do their share for the next 21 years.
7. Retirement - See stage 5.
8. Nursing home - See stage 1.

Used thegumtree many years ago when I was looking for house share in London - oh that was fun. Ended up sharing with a Kiwi couple, which was the best I could find - 6 months of hell, but I hate to think what the rest was like!

Why the hell has this been moved

Anyway

We have a lodger who is a little odd but has one huge redeeming feature. A mild case of OCD so if we go away for the weekend and leave him on his own he goes a little odd and cleans the house from top to bottom
