We have a currently painted room which we want to redecorate and use paper in. Mrs Sington has settled upon a horribly expensive patterned wallpaper, and as I paper like a chimp on crack, thought I would get the professionals in to do it. On a labour only basis, I have been quoted £600 for a room that is roughly 12' x 15'. This seems very expensive, but I have no idea yet whether this is right or wrong. Anyone have any experience of quotes for such work?

Seems a bit overboard in price to me ,I would have said 2 days max (£300)to paper the room and thats being over generous with the time scale.

That is price you have is just to paper the room ? or strip the old stuff off and line the walls first ?

How many "man days"? Although day rates will vary regionally, £150 a day is about right. Is it a difficult room to paper? Lots of windows, doors, cupboards, that sort of stuff? A room that size should be do-able in a day, two max.

Why not get another quote?

No, price is for papering only, no stripping or lining needed.

I am going to get another quote, I was just somewhat stunned by the figure I have been given, but as yet I have nothing to compare it with.

Try and talk the other half out of the idea. Wallpaper patterns quickly go out of fashion and your room will soon look dated, necessitating another expensive bout of re-papering.
With painted walls you can easily wipe them clean, effect minor repairs and redecorate very cheaply when she wants to change the colour scheme again.
