Quick call out for advice on cost for this. We are to be demolishing a property very soon and have had a quote to cap off the gas supply of £1000. This is not for digging up the pipe on the property aswell as the capping off as the demo team are to be digging up the pipe on the property. this seems very expensive for just a capping of the supply and supplying a certificate to say it has been done.

Any advice would be appreciated

You could ring Transco and suggest you smell a leak, when they come out to investigate.
Drop them some tea money to cap you off for elf'n'safety reasons.

oh what joy... hope you are not in a rush...

National Grid own the gas mains.

If you call them they will point you first in the direction of the meter owner/shipper/supplier of gas. They do have a guide somewhere on their website.

First, you have to remove the meter (legally) by contacting the gas supplier - could be any company from 100 (yep, one hundred) there is an MPAN (or similar ref number) on the actual meter. Now bearing in mind that they don't really want to lose future business, they are not in any particular rush to move their meter! You might wait for 8weeks... OR if you phone them up & rant/rave then you could be looking at 13weeks!!!

Once you have the meter removed THEN you can actually get the property disconnected, back to the main(s) in the highway (or front garden!) THIS is carried out by National Grid (or their approved subcontractors).

IF you try to get them out before the meter is removed, they will bill you for the abortive visit.
IF you try to remove it yourself... they get angry, very!
IF you 'have a gas leak' they will fix it!

IF some scrote burns down the property they 'might' do an emergency rush job... that'll be three days sir!!!! (yep, I have had that happen)

In terms of costs, the meter removal is free however there is a cost for the mains disconnection. This will include, generally, their subcontractor having to apply to the LA Highways to gain approval to open the highway (IF the mains is in the footpath/road) and make good to the LA Adoptable Standards. Including the LA fees.

Disconnection of services for demolition is one of the biggest pains in the ar*e that there is... bear in mind that you have to do the same for electric, water and telecomms...

Have fun.

Thanks Andya7 for the comprehensive reply

We have already had the gas meter removed and they were quite quick on this. I realise that there is about an 8 week wait but it is the cost that concerns me. Does it sound about right? Where do I go to to find alternatives to complete the capping off?

Water and electricity are being sorted out at the moment. BT were fantastic with their advise. When we explained that we were to demolish the house and there is a telephone wire attached they said that wasn't a problem and we can go ahead and demolish it. Should be fun cutting and twisting the wires together and hiding it in the nearest bush.

I have had similar (gas) disconnections done by 'McNicholas' in the Midlands and to be honest when you include Local Authority highway permit costs & reinstatement it probably isn't far off a grand. If you were doing several then there are economies of scale to be gained.

Water tends to be used by the site, however Severn Trent do not charge for disconnections.

As you say BT are pretty good and they have one single point of enquiry & then they distribute your requirements internally so that you end up with the right person.

Hope that helps.
