Just moved into a new place with gas heating: boiler on wall in kitchen and hot tank in the room above.
Every minute or so it sounds as if a fan turns on for a few seconds, its a bit noisy and i can hear it upstairs. Why is it doing that? :-)
This is with the main burner turned off. I've not had gas heating before so wondered if its something i have to get used to!

Would it be a pump in the airing cupboard?

If it is the fan then no reason why it should do that.

What is the make and model of the boiler?

I don't have a manual for it, only got internet on phone for now so searching for info is tricky :-)

After the boiler has been running the fan will stay on for a few minutes to clear the gases.
If the fan is damged or broken which does happen it may be touching something when spinning causing the noise.

There's nothing immediately obvious online anyway. If it really is the fan starting (and not some other random noise) then it shouldn't be doing this. In normal use, it could be that fan is starting but not tripping the air pressure switch so will cut out again, but that doesn't make sense with the burner turned off.

Is the house yours, or rented? If it's rented then get the landlord to fix it. The boiler must be very old now anyway.

thanks for the help.
It is a rented house, previous tenant moved out a couple of weeks before i moved in, turning the power and gas feed to the boiler off.
It seems to have got quieter, i don't know if it really is or that its me tuning it out. :-)
I'll ask the landlord to have it checked over, i don't have any idea when it was last done.
