Has anyone built their own barbecue? I am going to attempt it but beed a little advice on how to go about it.

I want a large grilling area with a variable height grill and a 'worktop' to my right so I can prepare/place food on.

Any help appreciated!

I built one those brick ones from b&q. They have the grill for about £20 then you build the rest out of bricks.
Took me one day and I had never laid bricks before.
They look good and last years. Mine was still there five years later when I moved.

Useful link - thanks from me too! Minor thread hijack, but what sort of 'foundations' would I need for one of those? The spot earmarked for my brick barbecue is currently grass...

Cheers

Buy a few slabs of concrete or slate or whatever and take the turf off and level it out. No need to cement it, just lie the slabs on the ground and as long as it flat jobs a good un.

Exactly the sort of low-effort answer I was hoping for! Cheers!

I'd still be tempted to put a small foundation in personally.

Lay out your first course of bricks on the turf and mark round it with powdered chalk, sand, or a spray can or whatever comes to hand. I would make the footing about a spades width (8" or 9" - double the thickness of the wall). You only need to dig down a spades depth assuming the ground is relatively solid.

Hammer in a few pegs and make sure they are level with a spirit level. Make sure the pegs are a few inches below ground level. Mix up some concrete with ballast (sand, stones and cement 1 cement to 5 ballast) and fill the trenches level with the pegs. Tamp down with a bit of stick and allow to set overnight.

Next morning crack on with your brickwork and once out of the ground and the bricks set backfill the trenches with soil.
