A close look round the greenhouse this morning revealed I have Grapes forming.
Just wanted to share as I'm really excited/pleased.
I grew this vine from a seed I spat out several years ago & was beginning to think it probably wouldn't fruit.

Now I need to research how to care for my vine.

The grapes may not be the same as the kind that you started with - I don't know if grapes seed true to type. But well done on getting this far!

I have a vine that's on its second full year this year, and whilst I'm very much a beginner, I do know that you have to prune it quite specifically each year and train it, so you get grapes and not just leaves.

This inspired me to buy some vines. I bought 2. One white Bacchus and one red Brandt. Both are 2' tall, so we wait and see

As I said mine is in its second year, we trained to get it to conform to the underside of our pergola last year and even then we had about 10 small bunches come the autumn.

They weren’t too bad flavour wise but they looked the Dogs Danglies hanging on the vine hehe

I looked at the title of this and thanked the good Lord that it was in Homes, Gardens and DIY. If ever there was a good reason for splitting up the P&P, here it is.

Anyway, nice choice on the Bacchus. I have been enjoying English wine from Three Choirs in Newent for a good few years now and their Bacchus is exceedingly drinkable; I thoroughly recommend you avail yourself of some via their Internet emporium.

I posted similar content last night.

Now it's gone...

Are whimsies forbidden in this forum...?

I think wild digressions into puerile humour are indeed forbidden in any content specific forum - if they divert from the topic. If one makes a joke that stays on topic I suspect it will stand.

I am not a mod, of course, and since both your question and my reply are hugely off-topic they'll probably get deleted.

HTH biggrin

Well didn't do the reasearch bit.

Some of them shrivelled up leaving only 5, all the size of peas.

To date I have eaten 3 and can honestly say they do taste quite pleasant. Research for next year I think.

not sure they if they need much care. my dad used to grow them outside, entwined around the pergola. all he used to do was feed them with fish blood & bone fertilizer and f all else. grapes everywhere in summer, and this is yorkshire - though iirc there is a vineyard up the road.

We left ours one year and they all rotted/shrivelled. It seems you really do have to do that thinning out business.

BTW, the vine prunings make a great wine, if that sort of thing floats your boat smile

My vine is 99% growth, 1% grapes. I know I'm supposed to cut it back to help it make grapes, but you're not supposed to prune while it's growing. Hence I'll just get more shoots and leaves frown

i haven't touched my vines at all and there are big bunches of grapes everywhere... i think they are all a bit too densely packed to become anything usable (iirc, wines used for vines are spread out more)

I think you're supposed to remove some so that the vine can grow the rest properly. Apple trees do this themselves - it's called the 'June drop'.
