Killing brambles

Can it be done? I think it's coming through from next door and is popping up at the bottom of some trees. Is wiping the leaves with a systemic weed killer likely to do the trick?

Cut the edge/tip of the bramble off and paint some weedkiller on. Then wrap some cling film round the end. Jobs a good-un.
