The very wise people at the office of fair trading has issued banning orders against two men prohibiting them from estate agency work.

All well and good I hear you say, EA's are the bane of everyones existnece.... wearing cheap suits, large knotted ties and far too much hair gel, but then get what they had done

article said:
Ambreen Gul, an employee of Skylord Properties in Ilford and Mukshud Ali, of Ashburton Estates Ltd, have been banned after being convicted of a number of serious offences including false imprisonment, grievous bodily harm, a firearms offence and theft.
Gul was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and Ali to seven years and nine months' detention,
following a trial at Southwark Crown Court on 23 June 2008.
So 9 months after they were convicted of some reasonably nasty offences, and indeed imprisioned the OFT have acted. Hardly a swift and decisive response was it?

article said:
Mike Haley, the OFT's director of consumer protection, said: "We will not allow estate agents who commit serious offences of violence and dishonesty to continue trading. It is crucial that people have confidence when they use estate agency services and we will act robustly to protect the interests and safety of consumers."
I would have thought that unless they had started moving cells on the open market it was highly unlikely that either of these gents were currently doing a huge deal of EA work.

Anyone can set up as an estate agent - no checks or qualifications needed.

Given the vast sums involved in what they do I find this amazing.

Yes, I should imagine it did, but I suppose you can't knock the work and effort she put in to get to earn over a million quid a year selling mortgages.

The good news is though that other than the odd 'holding' deposit they don't actually get to handle any of the money, other than when the solicitor pays their bill at the end of it, crying quietly at the day when we moved away from Law Society minimum % based fees.

I have to live near Ilford (well, I don't have to, I just do at the moment) and this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

I'd be surprised if they managed to find a single honest one in the entire place

hehe The head/nail hitting interface is strong in this one.

I just really object to the assumption that people with """"unusual""""" or non-Anglo Saxon names are "Not British" by implication. Could well be 3rd or 4th Generation immigrants with a similar level of "Britishness" as everyone else on our small rock. Quite possibly more contributing and useful members of society too!
