i demolished a concrete floor end of last week (approx 4m x 2m), as it was very very uneven and cracked, only to my amazment to find a well/tank underneath !

to be precise its a bung? made of concrete and open at the top, lined with bitumen. it must have been some kind of water storage years ago.

anyway i have emptied it and dried it out, and installed a wooden floor on top of it by means of 5x2 timbers, and a chipboard floor. i have also had to insulate it underneath with 100mm rockwool.

my concern is there is no ventilation under there, as there is in the rest of the house under the floors.

it wont be easy to install brick vents or such due to the dpc level outside.

does it need some kind of air movement under there to stop the timbers eventually rotting?

If it is lined with bitumen, it won't get damp so you should be OK!

If there is any source of potential damp, a timber floor needs cross ventilation.
