Yesterday At Ikea i ordered two pre built chest of drawers for the bedroom from the 'discount area' to be delivered today.

Today they show up and tell me they are not allowed to take pre built furniture upstairs!!

I tell them to take it back to the shop and i follow them. When i get to the shop i am told there will be no refund for the delivery as they could have delivered bedroom furniture to the living room and there will be no refund for the 'returned goods' as they do not do refunds on goods from the discounted area!

I didn't receive the goods i paid for, i didn't get the delivery i paid for and they tell me to bugger off!!!

To say i am currently fuming is an understatement!

The delivery paperwork says they can't do anything dangerous (fair enough) but the delivery man says they can't take ANY prebuilt furniture up stairs, could they not have mentioned it while i was paying for the delivery of pre built bedroom furniture?

AAARRGH, Why do i use these faceless companies.

I picked a bad time to quit drinking...

Simply take the drawers out (they unscrew)

Move the carcasses upstairs, take drawers upstairs, put drawers back in cabinet?

Seems easy enough to me?

I've lifted an ifea carcass upstairs, so it isnt that difficult.

I take it you don't have any friends to help you take it upstairs yourself?

I'm sorry, but I'd call that fair comment on their part. Boxed furniture is packaged in such a way as to have a known weight and dimensions and, from that, can be risk assessed for the people moving it. Built furniture is potentially much more expensive.

When buying anything from Ikea, I tend to use a local "man and van" to deliver, far quicker and a bit cheaper.

Could you not get someone to help you upstairs with it?!

You agree that i should pay them to do it and then do it myself too?

I am sure there is some small print somewhere stating their position. In fact, I'll bet your life on it.biggrin

You did get the goods - they were delivered. Not surprised they told you to bugger off!

Not now!

We really don't expect any type of customer service for our money nowadays eh?

Yep, I'm sorry but I would not automatically expect furniture to be delivered upstairs. It's not like a removal company.

Not on the paperwork they gave me!

There is no mention of pre built furniture.

I'm all for 'thread to the needle' assertion of one's rights... but even I'm struggling with this one. Anyway, I might order some underpants tomorrow and complain when the postman doesn't help me on with them. hehe

Even if the paperwork specifically said they would?

They're paid to deliver it to your house/address. Not a specific part of it. So they fulfilled their part of the contract.

I think a lot of the can't take things upstairs part is
a) health and safety (I know, I know)
b) The risk of getting sued. i.e. taking a chest of drawers upstairs runs the risk of dmaging paintwork, etc. Why would they take the risk of a £50 bill to repaint a bit of wall for the sake of a £20 delivery fee?

Not trying to piss in your cereal, but that's how they're going to read the situation.

It's a two-way thing, just because you pay them money doesn't mean you can get them to jump through hoops for you.
