I need to do something about the carpet on the stairs, it's past it's best and I think was just a quick tart up from the people I bought the house from

The stairway is hardboard casing, so not like I can uncover some mystical amazing floorboards that could be sanded and varnished

So, what have others done? I dont want to recarpet if I dont have to; there's laminate downstairs and good floorboards in the bedrooms/bathroom

Paint and treads? Or just save hassle and live with carpet?

Live with carpet gets my vote. The neighbours will thank you for it if your house is attached too.

My 2 cats would have fun with that smile

So for the week after that goes down, what else would you suggest?

How about some slabs of glass that stick out of the wall, a la Grand Designs?

Don't fancy your chances if you try to go down with wet feet though!

I honestly think Coir would be "cat proof".

If not, how about laminate floor?

Treads are easy: Lay the same as in (say) living room.
Risers: Glue the planks on and bond the gaps at the treads with wood filler.

Finish edges of each stair with either same colour (wood) edging or right angle in metal for detail.

apart from the fact that it would look st, the stairs will move so the filler will fall out, you'll end up with a trip hazard when the adhesive fails on a nosing and slip on the treads

get coir or carpet and be done with it

Laminate can be slippery, and darned painful if slippage occurs!
