My better half has very kindly offered for me to help a cousin of hers with a school project. The cousin lives and studies in Thailand, and is doing a project on eco friendly houses - something in which Europe is supposedly leading the way.

As I'm a property developer she's contacted me to ask about prefab eco friendly houses thinking that they're all the go over in the UK, but my knowledge is virtually zero (aside from one project just outside of Leeds).

Does anybody know of any such projects or manufacturers? Ikea supposedly sell prefab units, and there are supposedly a couple of German firms, but aside from that I'm a bit lost.

Does anybody know anything about the above?

I'd be quite surprised if there is. To the best of my knowledge (and the BRE's, who accredit/certify the PassivHaus standard in the country), there has only been one attempt to build one in this country, so far, and it failed at the post construction certification stage.

I'm about to build what are likely to be the first ones to be offered on the open market.

Gary Rhodes to run Baufritz built restaurant

The new bistro we are building on the south west coast in Christchurch near Bournemouth is making excellent progress. We can now tell you that this exclusive establishment will be run by celebrity chef and author, Gary Rhodes and it will be called ‘Rhodes South’. The restaurant will not only be famous for its exquisite food prepared by one of Britain’s most celebrated chefs, but it will also be the world’s first ‘carbon positive’ restaurant due to its superb eco credentials. And they’re off...! German team make fast work of Newmarket build

Baufritz’s fifth UK building project got underway last week in Newmarket on the hottest day of the year so far. Luckily there was ice-cream on hand to help the crowds keep cool as they watched the Germans do their stuff. The 350m² four-bed townhouse is being built for David Webb and his wife Jane. Overlooking Tattersall's in Newmarket town centre, this contemporary carbon positive home will feature an underground parking area and basement built by our partner firm Glatthaar. Champagne celebration as Baufritz wins two Awards

Baufritz had to make room in its bulging display cabinet for two new awards last month. The first was awarded to company owner and Director, Dagmar Fritz (pictured). She was awarded the prestigious Veuve Clicquot award for Businesswoman of the Year 2008 in Germany. Our second award comes as a result of Baufritz’s emphasis on family friendly company policy. 50 attend German Open Day

In June this year Baufritz UK took a group of potential customers to the heart of Bavaria to see its state-of-the-art headquarters in Erkheim. The interest in Baufritz since the Grand Designs show has been exceptional and more than 50 people took up our offer to explore our factory, House of Ideas (pictured), show houses and our award winning showroom, The HausSchneiderei. I do believe the pre-fabricated houses are being built by Ikea, in Gateshead as we speak. I'm sure a bit of googling will turn up something.

Another company that was leading the field in pre-fab houses, flats etc is www.panaloc.co.uk I've dealt with these guys on a number of occasions and can probably be of more help.

Feel free to PM with any questions

Not much, at the moment, I'm afraid. We're about to submit the Reserved Matters Planning Application on the site, upon approval of which (pretty much a formality in this case, due to pre-agreement of a very detailed design code and masterplan) we need to decide whether we actually 'push the button' and build the site, in the current market, or wait a while.

Assuming it gets the thumbs up from Board, we'll be building 5 'PassivHaus' houses as part of a larger (70+ units) development.

I probably ought not to say any more than that, and certainly design and construction specification is confidential at this time, but I will say that we're expecting the greatest challenge to be the very low infiltration rates (<1.0 cubic metres/sq. m/hr) that are demanded by the PassivHaus concept.

Well, from memory, it looks identical to the picture on their website. Next time I'm passing, I'll take a pic and post it up if it is.
