With the house move hopefully only a matter of weeks away one of my major concerns is how to move my 240 litre tropical freshwater aquarium.

How am I going to move a quarter tonne of water, tank, rocks and a couple of dozen fish the five miles to my new house, without stressing the fish, allowing the water to cool too much or letting the filter media suffer?

Anyone done this successfully? Anyone in my area want a mature and stocked aquarium??

Not as difficult as you think. I've upgraded my aquariums twice not actually moved them. When we fitted the lastest one (750 litres) effectline upgarded from a 600 litres tank we established a temp tank with an large external filter and transfered the fish and water into this. We then switched the tanks over and restocked with the fish and water. Most fish travel considerable distance so travel shouldn't be too much of a problem. The best bet would be to contact your local fish shop and see what they can do to help.

Get a big container with a lid on it stick all the fish in it together, the water tempertaure will take quite a while to drop to a point where it is upsetting the fish. Stick all the plants in another bucket using the aquarium water. Save as much of the water as possible, tricky but worth doing.

As soon as you've shifted the tank to its new location get the pump/filter working again and start to top up with water. Add plants/ornamonts back in and then the fish afterwards, will feel a bit happy with stuff to hide behind.

Yes, its a lot of hassle but they can put up with being shifted about and can live in a bucket for a few hours if they have to.

The good news is that's only a small volume of water to have to worry about.

Your local fish shop should be able to give or lend you bags. Buy a net. And lots of water conditioner. Ideally, if they also sell marines, ask for an empty salt bucket (rinse this out before use). And poly boxes.

Just catch and bag the fish. Make sure there is lots of air in the bag. Then put them in the poly boxes. Put some tank water into the bucket and put the filter in there to keep it live.

Reverse when at new house.

Take it none of your fish know how to drive the tank?
