We had everest windows in the house when we moved in over 20 years ago and apart form a couple of failing hinges which I've replaced all good.....until a few weeks ago when one of the locks broke on an upstairs window!

I tried various ideas to open the window but no luck and no-one seemed very interested in coming along to look at it so today I attacked the window and after making a small hole with my dremel managed to force the locking mechanism to move!

The handle uses a fork type lever to move a dowel but the dowel has sheared off the sliding arm:

This is the underside:

Reading online it seems this type of mechanism is NLA so has anyone else come across a similar problem and if so is there a better answer than fit a new window?

Amazing,

We had a very similar issue with an old Everest window yesterday. Only ours was the handle that I managed to repair in the end as it is discontinued.

The little dowel is from the locking arm on the window, not the handle.

Look at the metal strip on the underside of the window, hopefully there will be a part number somewhere, then try googling that number, maybe adding "Everest"

With luck it will come up with a supplier.

The other option would be to swop parts with another window that may not be opened as much

Send a photo on email to the above, looks like your handle is still available, so the rest might be, very nice people to talk to and deal with, will at least give you a straight answer.

Thanks for your reply, my description wasn't great but I'm aware the dowel has sheared off the metal strip. This is from one of the smaller 'top' windows we use for ventilation so not sure this is an option. Well done for fixing yours smile

Not great news from UPVC Spares 4 Repairs, they say the windows are at least 30 years old and there are no parts still available or any alternative parts that will fit due to the design. They say it's time for a new window!

Apart from replacing a couple of hinges the windows have been fine and tbh they still look great from inside and outside so there's no reason to replace apart from this lock.

I think it might be possible to simply weld the dowel back onto the sliding plate so will have a look at removing it and see if that works (I also think I could probably use a similar size bolt and lock it on with a bit of creative thinking) but a weld seems best.

I'll post up if it works as I can't be the only one with 30yo Everest windows!

I think Everest were taken over by Anglia Windows. They may have some old stock somewhere.

As Speedyman mentions Anglia now own the Everest brand, maybe this is son of Ted?

Good luck with that. I had a faulty handle on the Anglian windows that came with my house and, on phoning Anglian looking for parts or a repair, I was told to try talking to a local glazier instead.

If it isn’t the only opener in that room then just silicone it shut.

Well I decided to remove the locking strip from another window to check I'm on the right track and this shows where the dowel should sit:

This is off the broken window and it seems a simple enough job to weld the dowel back in place to fix the window:

I just need to find someone local with welding kit smile

A garage that does welding to fix cars for the MOT

Alternatively, if you have the tools, drilling the dowel and a hole in the metal bar, then tapping the hole and fitting a screw to hold the dowel. If you don't have a tap - and these are quite specialist tools - use epoxy glue to fix the dowel to the screw

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep that idea in mind if I can't find someone to weld it for me
