Question on ceiling light mounting

So I just got done installing a new LED ceiling light in the bathroom. When I removed the old pendant mount I found quite a big crumbly hole behind it.
On this occasion the included mount was just about wide enough for me to drill 2 holes either side and pop a couple of plugs in leaving me with a decently strong fixing for a lightweight LED light.
But in future, what are you supposed to do if your light mount is just too narrow to fix any screws into the ceiling because the hole and surrounding plasterboard is falling apart?

Put a bit of wood though the hole and use that to screw into

Most new builds have a wooden batten already above for this

Oh I did feel wood when I drilled through the plaster. Wasn't sure if wiring was around the area. I'm new to DIY but at least I'll know for next time
