Maybe i've got the wrong idea or wrong terminology!

Having our gates automated in a few weeks. We'll have a standard gsm intercom on one gatepost, but i'd like to have a camera fitted, not so much to identify the visitor, more for the 'security of the gates': We have a cple of neighbours in a tiny close and i've seen in the past visitors/deliv drivers to their properties encroach onto our drive when turning round.

obvs with the gates shut that can't happen, but in case some muppet misjudges things - i'd like to know who to be having a chat with.

it seems most external cameras offer a wide field of view - and i don't know how adjustable they are. for my purposes am thinking i just really want to 'see' across a 15ft entrance, not see who's coming/going among the neighbours.

1/ do narrow field view cameras exist? can existing ones be adjusted to get what i need (beyond sticking tape over part of the lens))

2/ not sure that the house wifi will extend far enough for it to work off - could it tap into the sim card that'll be in the gsm intercom?

3/ other suggestions??

cheers

A camera with a 4G sim and battery powered would work - and could be solar powered as well.

I've used these with success when power and or wifi is not available.

You'll get instantaneous alerts to your phone.

If using without a solar panel, the battery lasts for a long time.

They've been reliable and come recommended.

If you have power to the gate can you use a ethernet over power adapter to get a signal to the gate or even a ethernet cable through the power cable duct? I ask as this opens up using the likes the Doorbird D1101, I have an older version, and allows remote gate opening via an app. It does also work on WiFi, I ran a cable as I wrongly assumed WiFi would not reach to the gate.

I would also look at wireless cameras such as Blink as the range is much further than expected and instead of going narrow angle I set it to look across the outside of the gate so we did not capture the street.

I put an AES OPYN intercom with camera and key entry linked to the NICE gate controller , in my case a I extended my WIFI with EERO but i will work on 4G mobile comms... has the advantage I can operate it when I'm away from the house and alerts my phone .
Pretty wide field of view

thanks folks, i'll drill into reolink....as we won't have usable power to the gate ( gates will be on 24v so i doubt that there's a wifi extender that'd work off that).

I have a couple of these around the outside of the house. work off their own WiFi network (not the one in your house) that connects to a phone app. Stores everything on an SD card (supplied) and you can download directly from within the house grounds to your phone or view in the screen of the camera. Solar with AA battery back up, I hardly ever touch them. They are also IR for nighttime visitors, video, photo or both.

Reolink do cameras with optical zoom, which will give you a much more narrow field of view. I have one which I think is 5x.

I think most domestic cameras will run off 12v, which you should be able to get from a 24v system, if you can't use POE.

I used the same intercom; great bit of kit. I went for the PoE one and it has been bulletproof the last few months - the app opens quickly, even if you are out and about on mobile data, and the gate open / shut commands are instant.

I also put a reolink bullet cam on a tree pointing at the gates which helps make sure folk are in / out if you aren't home. Apparently they are on backorder now as they've sold well.

Snap ... I've got 5 Reolink Cameras aswell ... 3 are pan, tilt and zoom ...good kit and s/w aswell

Another advantage of the AES kit is the tamper alarm smile .

If you have WiFi range then a Ring Doorbell or similar is very unobtrusive and you can setup detection zones and get alerts of anyone or a vehicle approaching before anyone actually presses the doorbell.

You say you've no power and the gates are 24v, where is the
24v coming from, is it cabled from the house?

It was due to come from the detached gge - but the electrician who we've used for other bits n pieces poured cold water on that today as apparently we're close to maxed out on the garage supply. So looks like the gates will have to be fed from the house off the G/F ring.

It's very common to run gates off 24v batteriy sets (and gives you the ability to easily get out if there's a power cut/fire). Your sparky may be happy with a 24v battery setup with a very low power (2A? ) charging circuit from your garage.

We have one of these Eufy Solocams. Solar powered and you can set the area of interest for motion activation. v happy with it, no subscription charge, works well.

If wifi is weak, maybe add a repeater in the garage?
