Just had new toof put on 1930s semi but not happy about a couple things

Behind the chimney breast is a gap.

Here is a closer view of it.

From the other side.

On the valley where the hip meets the main roof its curved tiles all the way down but stops about two feet from the bottom and goes to a dry ridge system. Roofer is saying he couldnt fit curved tiles there. I think it looks unsightly (especially at the front) and its not like that at the back.

Above dormer window tiles dont go all the way down. Is this a problem?
Also does it need flashing by the sides at the bottom?

Thanks just want to make sure im not being conned here.

The gap behind the chimney looks a bit messy and I don’t know what that piece of slate batten at a jaunty angle is doing but it shouldn’t cause an issue re. water getting in, the back gutter should turn well up the roof.
Not sure what you mean by the dormer tiles don’t go all the way down but the lead soakers abutting the dormer cheeks shouldn’t be seen with plain tiles, they fit between them then turn up behind the lead cladding to the creeks.
Absolutely no idea what’s happening with the valley, does the pitch of the roof change dramatically on one side of the valley? Maybe the guy didn’t have enough valley tile? Looks a bit odd to say the least.

The tiles are misaligned where the valley tiles stop, so the join is out of step, hence why he couldn't continue the process. Surely all the batons should have been lined up correctly before the tiles were laid. Looks like a bodge to me but I am not a roofer.

Some of it looks good ,like the welding and the pointing on the verge’s

The bit of batten looks to be holding the tile up, it’s a bit of a bodge. As said the lead should go up quite away so shouldn’t leak but it could have been done better.

The valley is shocking. It needs redoing at the bottom so the tile battens are in line and then the valley tiles could be used . He has done it most of the way up so why not all of it ?? If the pitch is different on both sides then fair enough. But it could still have been done better than that.

I would not be happy with that.

The mis-aligned valley, does the bottom of the l/h bit of the roof in the pic kick up, pagoda style, near the bottom? That might explain why the slate battens don’t align in the valley at the bottom. Strange, to say the least.

That’s the weird thing, the battens do line up higher up, which they have to do for the valley tiles to work. Looks to be decent job from the pic you posted, will be interested to hear the reason for the lack of valley tiles lower down.

Hmm, conned, how much did you pay and what was it like against other quotes?

The lead weld is smart but theres a lot of that roof I'd want re doing it's pretty poor tbh.

Depends how far they have turned the lead up inside ? But it makes a nice hole for birds to get in to nest.

The valley tiles are a mess. Not true that they could not “fit them in”
I suspect the pitch is different on each separate section and they have measured up from the bottom when nailing the battens - one person doing one end and one the other - and it took them several courses before they noticed they were not lining up.

They will have to remove all the tiles, pull off the battens and re-nail. Quite a job

A good point I hadn't considered - Mice and Rats would also like a home!
