My tree , easily 30 years old has changed this year. Normally has heavy growth topsides and needs occasional trimming of shoots on trunk. This year nothing on top and all low shoots that I’ve left for some colour. Last year a crack developed at one of the branch divisions and I was advised to put spagnum moss over it (like a sticking plaster) which I did. However when I noticed the top stopped growing and energetic truck shoots were growing quickly I stopped trimming them…would be interested in gardeners opinion (I’m not very horticultural ) what’s went wrong and if anything could be done to treat it. Cheers .

Apical dominance, or rather lack of.

When a plant is growing the growing tip produces auxin which diffuses down the stem and inhibits side shoots form growing. As the top of your tree looks dead that supply has stopped, and nature has switched to Plan B.

You could cut the dead section off and leave the base to be a bushy shrub.

Is it an Olive Tree ?
Just that my Olive Tree lost all its leaves this winter , but is gradually coming back ....starting at the bottom .... I have pruned the higher branches.

or it could be the same an Oak tree suffering from "Stags Head" when the crown dies
