Morning all,

I need a new grease gun, I only use it a couple of times a year for trailer bearings/hitches etc., but my current one which takes cartridges leaks and is generally unpleasant to use.

Wish list: good quality, doesn't leak, small. Quite happy with a push type to be refilled from a tub but the last time I looked at a Clark push type in Machine Mart the screw on fill cap threads were rough.

What have you got/used that's decent?

Bookmarked smile

Every single one I’ve purchased in the last 5 years or so has been absolutely rubbish!

I think they all are messy to use. horrible things hehe

All you can do is buy one which is branded and not the cheapest.

I hear good things about the electric guns but not sure which are any good.

Over the years, in excess of 40. I have owned a few grease guns. I have never had one that consistently worked if left for a few months, Most needed a clean out before use. They all spread grease around far easier than getting it in the nipple. The cartridges make no difference.

I( would just carry on using what you have and wear gloves and carry lots of rags around with you.

The electric ones are good if you do a lot of work on heavy machinery (as you put so much through them). For anything other than that I don't think they're worth the expense.

One thing that should improve your experience is using better quality grease. Some greases seem to dribble oil out more than others. The LM2 that I use (Wurth brand) seems pretty good for this. I think this is probably the biggest factor in reducing the mess from infrequently used grease guns. I doubt you'll ever make it a clean process though, they're just messy things.

I thought it was just me being an idiot with how terrible I’ve found most grease guns!

Interested if there’s a consensus on a good one. My cheapy Laser one seems so inconsistent as to if it will actually supply any grease or not, despite being full.

Get yourself the best (IMHO) manual gun with screw-in cartridges: a Fuchs Reiner grease gun. Only £40 ish, and all your nightmares of fighting last-century grease guns will vanish.

e.g. https://shop.lrtlubricants.co.uk/products/fuchs-re...

So much easier: the cartridges just screw in, no mess at all. And the cartridges aren't expensive.

There are some gun copies out there too, the Draper one is ok.

If you don't already have one, you'll want a decent coupler: the G-Coupler is IMHO one of the best, check the thread (imperial/metric) carefully on your gun.

Greasing up will never be a chore again.

Thanks for the tip. I've just taken on a classic which relies on regular greasing to avoid the needle roller bearings falling apart, so I think I'll invest.

Best thing for a grease gun is a coupler that attaches to the nipple, means you don't have to have 3 hands to operate!

All grease guns lock on to the nipple (at least all the ones I have had). Just unscrew the end a bit, put it on the nipple and tighten the end up.

Ditto, I’ve ordered one and some grease, I’ll report back!

But that means you'll invariably have greasy fingers from the end of the gun, this lets you attach the nipple 'remotely'. biggrin

Thank you for that!

I tend to think of grease guns as things you inherit, I've got about 4, and wouldn't use any of them without putting on at least two pairs of gloves.

Most things I got where I could use a grease gun, it's been better to strip, clean, grease and re-assemble.
Or just unscrew the nipple and squirt some grease in with a syringe.

I bought this from Amazon 3 years ago and it has been brilliant. Gets used weekly and still as good as new.

This looks interesting and tempting! Have just had the regular fight with current one, and again looking for a new one. Saw recommendations for Alemite, and John Deere branded. But this one looks completely different so very tempted.
