Hi all, we have just had our chimney repointed and re-rendered as it had become quite a state. We along with our chimney co owning neighbour aren't too find on the render brown and want to paint it white to match the rendered house colour. So the plan is to shoot up and get it done before the scaffolding comes down.

The guy who rendered it said seal it with 3 coats of "X" then a couple of coats of masonry paint.

A friend who is a painter/decorator said not to use sealer as that for old flaky surfaces and all it needs is a mist coat followed by 2 full coats of "CT"

(both of these were told to Mrs Buzz and she cant quite recall what "X" was and presumed that "CT" was Crown Trade as his prefered brand - but we can)

If the house looks a little ratty I can just shimmy up the extension ladder and give it a paint, but the chimney doesn't exactly present the same ease of access, so needs a good job from the start.
I am a little curious about the what the knowledge on PH suggests is the best way to go about it. At the risk of receiving more contradicting methods and being even more confused.

Look at the paint maker's recommendations for new render?

...stuggling to understand the bit about 'aren't too find on the render brown', what do you mean?

my guess is "aren't too find" should be "aren't too fond" but I'm not OP so wait for him to reply

Decorators method worked for me.

BUT it took a long time to fully dry out before it could be painted.

Whichever exterior render paint you use, follow their instructions.

Most recommend their primer / sealer.

To be fair I should also have added that we had an extension built and he painted the the whole house new and old about 4 years ago and still looks fine.

It's just that when the renderer suggests otherwise it's introduces doubts!

Yes that was my other thought, hopefully being up high in the nice sun we have now is helping that along.

To be fair this is probably the right advise and I have just been over thinking it!
