Front garden revamp
Discussion
Hey All,
Looking at redoing our front garden, ideally something low maintenance but open to suggestions for the right thing.
So we have a driveway and grass, there's not much space for a second space although it would be good would likely be too costly, so your thoughts would be appreciated, I usually lay grass seed yearly but the soils crap so considering a full re-soil and laying seed or put real turf down for a head start and flower border as in the last picture, the broken grass is the current state.
If anyone has any other budget friendly suggestions I'm all ears.

Remove the grass and fill it with roses or nice perennials.
This is the sort of thing I was looking for, are perennials permanent, will look into this.Huzzah said:

Agree with the above ideas. It’s pointless as a lawn and you could fill it with some lovely perennials.
Just for some ideas, Pieris is beautiful. Maybe a corner of lavender, but make sure to hack it back every year. Azaleas are pretty stable too.
Yes other neighbours have a lawn, so will need some separation barrier Just for some ideas, Pieris is beautiful. Maybe a corner of lavender, but make sure to hack it back every year. Azaleas are pretty stable too.
Would wood chippings be good around? Would prefer that to stone

How much sun does it get? I agree with the above, take the turf out and plant it up. Maybe a small wall at the front would look smart and protect it from stray dogs and the like
It gets a fair bit of sun in the morning, sun rises from the front of the house and sets in the back, a wall would be nice but probably cost too much for what I'm wanting, were in a cul de sac so 4 houses.
Take a look around locally, decide on style and planting you like, then work out how to achieve it.
Local nurseries can be helpful, you'll want year round interest. Show them photos and ask for discount/cash account.
Personally I'm not keen on bark mulch, needs regular topping up and can look very messy quickly.

I've been thinking about this.
A local house has a similar size garden, they've retained 1/2 the grass and made a big rockery (rocks and dirt). Planted up with bulbs and alpines it's really colourful and pretty through the year. The height also gives it interest, enough to detract from the flat lawn.

My Dads an avid Gardner but his- garden has grass and plant borders, everyone local has grass but not keen and not keen on the cost of a double driveway.Local nurseries can be helpful, you'll want year round interest. Show them photos and ask for discount/cash account.

Local nurseries i'm not so sure? You mean garden laces?
I prefer the look over bark over stone, having stone may be quite odd as there are 4 houses and all gardens are similar with only 1 with corner extension putting stones down to use as a driveway, will add some pictures of the street for example we have a small private road that belongs to us.

I know absolutely nothing about plants so gave up trying and used Garden On A Roll. I'm bloody happy I did. Sure, it's more expensive than going to a garden centre and picking some plants out - but you're paying for a planting scheme that will work, rather than planting some plants and hoping they take/look good etc (I've failed at this too many times)
I went through this exercise with our front bank (have tried so many different options, none of which worked - too many big trees). Such a simple solution - you plug in your dimensions and they type of border you want and they send you a planting template and all the plants/initial feed/even some tools. It's literally planting by numbers. Typically you'll receive a load of 2 & 3L sized plants, but the template shows you were to plant them so caters for growth. All you need to do after is weed/feed. I chose a shady border here due to the canopy. I'll probably do this again around the back with a mediterranean border from them this year.

I will definitely use this place again. https://www.gardenonaroll.com/
