Cable run to my garage?
Discussion
Hi all
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on running a cable from my house to my garage across a communal area?
The total distance is approximately 18 meters and short of digging a trench I was thinking of getting a company in to use a mole type device.
The cable run is across (under) a block paved communal area which is under the control of the management committee so I would need to seek the necessary permission but I don't think it would be too much of a problem.
Has anyone used a mole type company?
Open to suggestions and ideas please.
I live in a rank of 3 terraced houses and the garages are in a similar pattern but not adjoining so we could potentially share the cost and do all 3 in one go?

Long time since so things may have been miniaturised but you used to have a sizeable hole for the driver and at the other end too.
You need to be careful that there aren't any other services in the way, water, electric, gas, drainage etc.
Can you not go overhead? Strong cable anchored at each end and then your power cable fixed to that.
Going communal, who is going to end up using all the electric and who is paying?

Thats what I was thinking. Thin catenery cable, with mains cable attached, like this:

Cheap and easy , assuming you have a high enough anchor point at the garage end. You could even mount a scaff pole vertically to give you the height if need be. Very easy to do . I use one (pole) to mount a CCTV cam on up high.

Thanks for the replies, it's power to my garage for potentially charging a car
Can't go overhead as all the locals would be up in arms, it's a private supply for my garage but would potentially share costs with adjoining neighbours do do the same exercise.
£1200 for a mole is not too bad if it saves hours of digging

As others have said, even if the landowners agree, it’s unlikely to be simple, given that the area is likely to be criss crossed with existing services.
If it really is just for charging your car, then look at a small solar set up - we used to have one for our boat that worked surprisingly well for keeping the battery healthy - and solar and battery technology has come on leaps and bounds since then.

You want this:https://www.bimblesolar.com/solar/small-panels/vic...
(or anything around 100W - I linked that as it's a bargain )
And this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Victron-SmartSolar-MPPT-7...
. connect the battery terminals on the Victron to your car battery direct. Or with a nice plug in a cable, of course.
Touch over £100 and will take you an hour to install,. plus the Victron will give you historical data (voltages and current) in the phone app which can be handy.
Whack the panel on the garage roof. If its flat, it'll still work but will need a quick clean once a year , otherwise, you can add this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Renogy-Adjustable-Solar-P...
(I use one with a 440w panel on it and adjust the angle for winter

Needs clarification as it is a bit fundamental!
Had building control due in one morning many years ago, they were checking the new foul water man holes for leaks. Put the bungs in and started running the taps, hardly any water was making it to the man hole. Bit of quick investigation and found the electric board had got a direct hit on the underground pipe down to the man hole with a mole. Quick work with a couple of slip collars and piece of pipe and got it sorted before the council turned up.
Be careful if you’re doing this where any services are buried.
